Speed runs - using "legit" methods

My friend follows speedruns of Borderlands and other games. The thing that bugs me about it though is hearing how they use glitches and things that have been patched out.

I’d much rather see/watch/hear about speed runs of the game in it’s current state. So the video would say as of “version x from July 2015”, I ran the game this way.

An example run might be a holojack playthrough. And perhaps he uses “money is power” as means of taking down stuff earlier than should be possible. But that’s legit.

Also acceptable are level shortcuts. For example, the methane plant level provides a pipe that lets you waltz in and out without even touching the turrets on the bridge. The pipe seems to be intended for that. There’s even ammo up there.

I suppose a clever rocket jump, or finding a hole in the wall is ok too. Sort of edge cases I suppose. As not everyone thinks of those as legit.

I guess I’m just tired of hearing about speedruns that use gunmerging, speed glitches, etc… I’d find it much more interesting if it were something that the average player today can compete with.

That being said, let me know if you can beat playthrough 1 in 12 hours or less. Coop. I did it using Jack. In coop online. Bad ass rank on.

Other options. Reset UVHM at level 70. Ditch all guns/equipment, and try to get your best time beating the game.

“Speed” runs. The word “speed” is in the name of the thing. Using glitches etc, is generally the most effective means of increasing “speed”.
Now, while I like your idea for legit runs done in a quick manner. You can barely call said runs, “speed” runs.
FYI, I used quotation marks around “speed” because it isn’t really a challenge to sham-fleet your way through a level. It’s basically just timing to see how fast you can run through the maps. So “speed” should be taken with a grain of salt.

I like the idea of legit speed runs as well.

Starting from white equipment makes thing very hard, but interesting. In this case a 2 or 3p co-op would win this contest. Because the game is progressing by reaching some checkpoints. The team can seperate and try to reach different checkpoints to save travel time.

Shamfleeting the game would also be boring. So, really I’m talking about lucking into good equipment, using good skills, skillful playing, map shortcuts, etc…

Very much agreed. The balance being that you can’t help/res each other as easily but the enemies are tougher.

The other important factor in speed runs is the movement speed of the character. Probably Athena is the best in this area. With an eridian classmod giving +4 to Mercurial and Ephodos, and an acrobat oz kit, she can reach to very high speeds.
