Hellborn Krieg build help!

Hi!
Im thinking about starting a Krieg for the first time but have some doubts about how to build him.
As a Gaige player I love elemental DoT so I thought about building a Krieg focusing in the Hellborn tree and the Torch COM. Is this viable at all?
The spec Im thinking about is this one: http://bl2skills.com/psycho.html#50005015000051050004055151153131050

I have chosen the Mania tree to complement it because I like to melee too. But I have some doubts about it:
The first is about the shield. I know that the FotFH is one of the best shields for Hellborn but I speced into Silece the Voices so do I need to use the Rough Rider due to the self hit?
Also, do I need to stack health and damage reduction? Because I skiped Feed the Meat, Taste of Blood and left only one point in Numbed Nerves for the COM boost.

And the burn damage from Fire Fiend is based on what?
Also, is Buzz Axe Bombardier buffed by Fuel the Blood and Strip the Flash?

Thanks a lot and any input is welcomed!

Bem-vindo ao tren da carne e locura vizinho.

I’d put the pull the pin point into Raving Retribution… And put some points into Feed the Meat. Will you run OP levels?, the Rough Rider works as a buffer for self hits.

@Giuvito @Gulfwulf we have a new passenger guys

  1. Yes, a hellborn-mania build with either a torch or toast com is pretty viable.

  2. FotF is for scrubs, go with a Rough Rider… you’re not a scrub, are you?

  3. Health stacking works really well at op8 given the right circumstances, even with a melee-focused hellborn build sometimes I was able to heal faster than enemies could damage me. Some people may not like it because healthgate but the ideia with the high health is pretty much to not need healthgate to survive hits. It may not be a necessity to counter StV but you’ll certainly notice a difference in between self-hits that take 90% of your max health to something around like 8~12%.

  4. Damage reduction is aways nice with Krieg, after all, he’s supposedly a tank. You probably won’t notice much difference when spending points since damage reduction follows a logarithmic curve (has diminishing returns) but I personally like to have the most out of DR.

  5. I would also like to know how Fire Fiend’s dot is calculated, it doesn’t seem to do much damage but it does enough for a decent healing through Elemental Empathy even without a moxxi weapon at hand.

  6. BaB is affected by both FtB (wich does more than double the melee damage at 10/5 with 100 stacks), and Stw (clicky linky). Note however that StV’s self-hits are also buffed by FtB and can increase the self-damage to around 30~40% of your health if I recall correctly (around 80% if you’re slagged, took me some time to figure that out during digi-peaks)

About your skillpoints distribution, I would just change a few things: swapping the 5 points from Blood Overdrive into Taste of Blood since you plan to go melee sometimes, skipping Pull the Pin, taking one point from Salt the Would into Redeem the Soul for increased ffyl time and the ability to trade places with teammates just as their timer is about to expire, maybe swapping the 5 points from Strip the Flesh into Feed the Meat for more health and since you’re also planning on going melee, probably saving one point somewhere to get Raving Retribution as it probably will be the way you’ll inflict most of your fire dots while buzzaxe rampaging (thus keeping yourself healed and ignited).

also, @BookEmDano might have better inputs on hellborn-mania gameplay since I pretty much focused on the melee aspect of it.

Obrigado, vizinho! Krieg is the only VH that I didnt play yet but playing again as Gaige focusing in her DoT potential opened my eyes to Krieg and his Hellborn tree.
And yes, I think Im going to try the OP levels later so the FotFH is out I guess. Also, Im swaping the little bonus from StF for Feed the Meat.

@Maveco Thanks for the reply, man! And for the link too.
Also, Im picking your spec over the one I posted before. Trading StF for Feed the Meat seems worth with Krieg.

Also, about the gear… Hellborn screams for Hellfire and the spell grenades from Tina DLC. What else should I look for, guys?
And thanks again for the help!

Slagga, as usual or a slag pimpernel incase you want to be super-hipster, for other weapons you could look for a tattler, hellfire, hornet, plasma casters, omens, conference calls, butchers, unkempt harolds, twister, etc. there are a lot of choices for different scenarios/enemies you want to shoot.

As for grenade mods, chain lightning is a pretty good choice for damage and getting yourself ignited… although I cannot make a post in Krieg’s subforum without recommending a low level purple slag bouncing betty with lobbed being my favorite payload, other choices could be: storm front, fire bee, pandemic, quasar, meteor shower/bonus package, crossfire/bouncing bonny

This is my current build for Krieg using elemental Butchers as the main weapons with a Slagga as backup, a RR for the shield and MM/Firestorm/Fire Bee/slag Bouncing Betty for grenades. I also keep a DPUH and Badaboom on hand as well as a few other weapons for specific situations…

There isn’t a class mod that boosts Numbed Nerves so you’ll want to either go all in on this one or follow @Maveco’s advice and pick up Taste of Blood. Both would be my advice if you want to focus on melee more than pew pew pew.

I can’t say I’ve ever tested the Burn damage on Fire Fiend and how much it’s influenced by Burn Baby Burn, Flame Flare, class mods, and elemental buffs. This is going to require a trip to the practice dummy to sort out. My guess is that it is influence by all of the above, it’s just figuring out the base Burn DoT.

My typical gear includes: Slagga, Omens, Slow Hands, Butchers (I’d recommend Conference Call if your system can tolerate it. Krieg’s insane fire rate buffs and Conference Call lag the hell out of my PS3), Twister, Hellfire, Hornet, Infection, Plasma Caster, Pimpernel, and Unkempt Harold. Rough Rider and Blood of the Ancients to help stack damage reduction and health, plus you’ll need the extra ammo on Krieg given the amount of bullets you can spray. Chain Lightning is perfect for instant self-ignition and healing. I just jump into a room and throw it off the ground and I’m on fire. Obviously Quasar and Storm Front have their advantages too. Slag Betty is always good to have but I’m used to just using Slagga.

For class mods, Legendary Torch or Psycho for the best in tankiness and survivability. Psycho has a bit more strengths for melee, Torch for better gun play with it’s fire rate boosts. If you want to go all in on the DPS and gun play then give the Toast mod a try. But you’re giving up a little bit of the Burn damage which, in turn, affects the amount of healing you get from Elemental Empathy. It’s definitely capable of ending fights faster with its boost to Pain is Power. I’d say experiment with all three and make minor adjustments to your build to accommodate.

Yes. I would max out all three. As Dano said, there are no COMs that boost NN, so either go 5 or go home.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Thanks a lot!

Sorry for the bad info on Numbed Nerves. I swear to you that I saw it in the Legendary Torch COM wiki page, my bad.

So, what about this spec?
I skipped Strip the Flesh to get Feed the Meat and left Pain is Power aside. Penalty to critical hit is kinda… awkward. Specially with the boost to accuracy from Fire Fiend.
This way Im getting a better healing from Elemental Empathy, I guess.
Also, I got one last question about the skills: Thrill of the Kill is necessary while rampaging or Elemental Empathy is enough to keep me healthy?
Im not really worried about it because the Action Skill is going to be like a emergency button when my helath bar is below 33% but it is nice to know.

Talking about gear, Im thinking about a Hellfire to kill regular stuff, a Florentine to slag and strip shields instead of the regular Slagga and a good corrosive gun like the Kitten.
Im playing on PS3 so the CC laggs me a lot. The Slow Hand is a good damage dealer or is mainly used to self-ignite Krige? The only scenario I use it is when playing Maya. A slag one with the vertical grip comes in hand when you dont spec Ruin and to heal and slag at the same time through restoration.
The Butcher seems pretty good on Krieg as everyone use it. What is the catch? :open_mouth:

Also, what about the Fire Storm? Tinas spell grenades have better DoT damage so I can make use of the Hellborn tree better.

TotK is useless while buzzaxe rampaging since you already get full health from kills while the action skill is up now Elemental Empathy is the way to keep yourself healthy in between kills, it helps quite a lot with survivability since it’s the only healing you’ll get outside of kills.

I should probably reiterate how much I dislike the Florentine, in my opinion is highly overrated as it’s bad at slagging (relatively bad, as in compared with the Slagga or a slag Pimpernel) and it’s only legit use (shield stripping) is highly irrelevant when you can achieve the same effect with pretty much any weapon given how little damage non-boss/badass shields take before being depleted… You should probably try it for yourself and see how it performs as my despise for the florentine may cloud my judgement of it (most likely isn’t).

This is why I like the combo slag-betty plus twister/swordsplosion/carnage/dpuh over weapon-swapping between the florentine and other weapon, not only you strip shields in one shot but also you often kill them in one shot while still doing it faster.

Too risky to use compared with the Chain Lightning, you may end up hitting yourself and even with the higher health and damage reduction you might not survive if you inflict it’s dots on yourself, not to mention how easier it is to hit enemies with the chain lightning.

Ammo regen and insanely high fire rate. If the CC lags the PS3, the Butcher is even “worse”.
Go Omen, Blockhead or Twister. Shield stripping with a Quasar or a SF.

This is true but in open areas I loved using the Firestorm I had before reaching level 72 in UVHM- on flesh enemies with all of his other fire boosted skills it wrecked enemies. I’ve yet to find an OP8 version yet though so that might be a different story…

I also enjoyed using it but it was able to chew through krieg’s full health at op8 fairly quickly : )

Still can be used though.

I dont really like the Florentine either. Never used as a Gaige and Axton player myself but I thought that striping shields and slagging could be like killing to birds with one stone to avoid the penalty against shields for my fire weaponry. Im going to test it when the time comes.

If I’m on fire already does the fire DoT from the Fire Storm applies or the one that is ticking remains? With Burn, Baby, Burn and the COM boost the Fire Storm should wreck through flesh easily, like Gaige DoT.

The thing with the CC is the number of pellets I guess. I dont know if only the fire rate would lag the PS3 system. To be honest, Im tired of there three shotguns vizinho. I already use them a lot on Axton and Gaige so Im going with new stuff if I can. The Hellfire sounds nice and is a gun that I do not use often. But Im going to test all of them when I reach 72!

Also, what about the Slow Hand? Is this good at dealing damage?

Not true, at least for me. It’s the pellet split combined with the fire rate boosts that Krieg has that generate the lag on PS3. Because the Butcher doesn’t have that pellet split, you actually have a very manageable Hyperion shotty that can take full advantage of Krieg’s buffs.

@Maveco I agree. No need to double dip with Firestorm at the risk of downing yourself. It’s just too unpredictable to be used to great effect. Grenades should be geared towards: self-ignition, slagging, stacking Bloodlust, healing, shield stripping, or crowd control. If I wanted to deal damage I would run Legendary Reaper and spam Meteor Showers or Fastballs.

@l_gabrielcruz Raving Retribution really is worth 1 point for its passive healing effect combined with Elemental Empathy. You would be surprised how much it helps when you’re trying to get that kill to heal and tanking shots from surrounding enemies. I think it’s a very underrated capstone.

Since I play on PC, wasn’t a very informed stuff so thank you for correcting me.
I can make a short video with the Hellfire stuff.

Hey. Sorry for the late entrance.

Welcome aboard @l_gabrielcruz

Just to speak of the initial build.

I can’t stress the love I have for Numbed Nerves. Especially on Hellborn builds.

Your build is versatile, I’ll sure as hell give it that.

Only issue I have with it; is it attempts to accomplish a bit much all at once.

I am not a huge proponent of builds that do both explosive as well as the DoT elements concentration. While I do understand that it does give a sold boost to thrown buzzaxes and the sort, there is also an opportunity cost in choosing them.

Certain abilities like Fire Fiend are also very dependent on which item you use.

If I’m going in with FOFTH, I don’t bother with it. Because my shield bursts have more of a chance of setting me ablaze.

I also feel like the boost in accuracy from fire fiend is kind of “done in” by the pain is power. Sure, 30% can make that head shot viable, but an experienced gamer like you would hardly need it to hit center mass, and the headshot isn’t so useful with PIP.

RR can also be useful as a method to make sure that enemies whose shield you did nick a bit, don’t go hiding it out and allowing it to recover.

I wouldn’t at all bother with pull the pin, you’re already level 72.

I’ll add more if I can think of more.

This may be useful to you vizinho, Hellfire + Raving Retribution.

After I saw it in action Im thinking about it to be honest. Seems to come in hand while Rampaging too to heal through Elemental Empathy.

@Giuvito Thanks for the input!
I have changed my spec since the first post, it looks like this right now. A little better, isnt it?
Im still torn between Bloodbath, Fuel the Blood and Blood Overdrive as all of them helps with this hybrid playstyle.
Also, about the versatility of the build… yes, it means to be versatile. The main focus is in Hellborn, with guns like the Hellfire and the Heartbreaker plus the Fire Storm grenade, probably. The action skill is like an emergency button so I specced down Mania to support it a little more. I also like melee and the fact that Krieg does not need Roid bonus to be great with it helped this choice.

And the point about Pain is Power and the boost in accuracy is totally right. I started to build this spec looking to get all the boosts that the Legendary Torch had and later, with the help of the answers from this thread, I could see it better.
Thanks to all of you, guys!

Thanks, vizinho!
