I’ve tried to like this shotgun since the game first came out, but it seems like no matter which character I use it just doesn’t perform at the level I think its supposed to. Is there something I’m missing? Does it have to be rustlers with Jakobs grip to be good? Is there any O2 kit I should pair with it to make it better?
Yes it most likely needs rustlers (docs is also pretty good) to be good.
Obviously matching grip gives u more shots and faster reload.
Pluses:
Jakobs Crit (good with innate Crit bonuses like Wilhelm and Jack)
NE + (50%?) Explosive Splash
Relatively High DMG/Pellet (also good for Splash)
Decent Pellet Count (9 w/rustlers)
1 ammo/shot (also a 3 shot shotgun)
Predictable Spread
Minuses
The spreads’ a sinusoidal happy face that spreads out, making it an ideally close range weapon unless u have a way to artificially extend range like with + bullet speed (accuracy don’t do too much)
It does explosive damage, a pretty good gun for cryo+explo builds. Also it only consumes one ammo per shot, so even you don’t do as much damage as with a Ravager, it’s still very efficient.
I like it on my Boomtrap the most, all those reload skills+explosive buffs+ammo efficiency make it a pretty good choice.
haven’t tried it yet, but i get the feeling this would work really well with aurelia with wintertide.
Do explosive O2 kits increase the splash damage?
grenade damage increases splash.
Explosive relic boost the splash.

Quick question: Is it neccessary to get the Moonface with a Jakobs grip and Docs or Rustlers? Can an Ornery( only Jakobs grip w/ no accessory) or a Texas with a bandit grip do OK as well? I got lucky yesterday with a lot of drops, but I doubt I’ll find a Jakobs grip Rustlers or Docs 
Also, random question: What makes Dahl railguns so good? I know that with the penetration they can melt things on Nisha (if your console doesn’t crash), but what about the other characters? Is it good on them too? Any synergies I should be aware of?
I mean Rustlers Jakobs Grip is recommended tenfold, I mean a normal Moonface is objectively worse, but work with what you got.
I was fond of Dahl Railguns only because of glitches and basically only with Nisha. 6 Overloaded Railgun shots that can crit is scary AF. The catch is that thing is going to buck like a horse and you’ll be lucky just to hit the thing you’re aiming at with ur burst let alone crit.
Other glitched Dahl Stuff (like the Minigun or Repeater on Red Glitch) does REALLY will with most characters, lots of High DPS overload shots that melt on crit.

Which is better?
Jakobs grip is a must, as the reload speed is pretty bad. Accessory, I’m not sure the Rustlers is that good (never tried) the firing pattern is already hard to deal with so lower accuracy …
Depending if the bonus is enough to make a difference, the Texas or well kept prefixes are also pretty good. That said, a ornery is also just fine.
If you’re playing with Nisha, FFOB will make it shine, and mag6 and Hot lead will work even though the splash is explosive.
@John It depends on your trigger finger and which character you are using. If you have a fast finger and all 3 skills I just mentioned, then the Moonface. Otherwise, the Ravagers.
