Tubbies; night vs day for spawning

The question about time of day affecting Tubby spawns near Ellie’s came up in another thread recently, and since I’ve been hunting Tubbies there I thought I’d take a stab at proving/disproving it all.

If you want to help out, simply post your results here. Please clearly state number of runs; night or day; any definite Tubby sighting (the main focus is the Tubby but feel free to include any other interesting sightings).

The target

What I’m doing is running Bug Gulch from the back entrance to Ellie’s junkyard to the far end where the Black Queen spawns; ten runs at night, ten runs in daylight, using my 72nd lvl Maya (I don’t think gear/build matters much here, but I’ll post if if y’all want) and noting what I see (Black Queens, Loot Goliaths, etc…anything outside the usual Spiderant/bandit spawns). Once I reach the far end, I’m basically just watching the fights develop, targeting certain enemies in an effort to keep the spawns flowing, and waiting to see what happens. When the spawns are obviously over, I’ll mop up anything still staggering around and do the loot-check.

Night runs, as of 10 Aug '15

  • Total number of runs - 34
  • Tubby sightings - 12

Day Runs, as of 10 Aug '15

  • Total number of runs - 42
  • Tubby sightings - 13

Daylight is holding a slight lead at this point, but there also have been more daylight runs overall.

Are these runs just standard solo play, or are they using the 4 player glitch?

Interesting study here. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Tubbies don’t have an increased chance for the Vault Hunter COMs. It’s probably possible but very unlikely as it would be a world drop (but you still would have found any of the normal stuff they drop too).

Nonetheless, I look forward to more results here.

Standard solo play, and trying to make them as real-world as possible.

The wiki says that both the Binder and Cat COMs are dropped from Tubbies @ lvl 62+ and the Nurse drops from Chubbies @ 62+…have I missed something?

This is quite a confusing statement of the wiki to make.

Chubbies don’t actually exist in UVHM as they are replaced by Tubbies there. Only they drop the COMs which I like to call Tubby COMs. The Levels are correct but your own level can be lower (I tested it on 61 and it was possible, 60 could be too but much more unlikely, only if you have both Level Cap Upgrades of course), the COMs themselves can’t be lower than that however so it is unlikely to see them on lower levels.
Anyway, Tubbies drop the COMs you mentioned and their counterparts for the other classes. They don’t drop Slayer of Terramorphous (obviously) and the Vault Hunter COMs I mentioned. If you found a Legendary Siren COM, the standard one, something else must have dropped it. If it is one of the COMs you mentioned in that quote than you killed a Tubby at some point in that run as only they can drop those.

OK, I’m slightly confused…what’s a Vault Hunter COM?

Callback COMs referring to the BL1 Vault Hunters. So Legendary Siren, Soldier, Hunter, Berserker and for the DLC Classes simply Mechromancer and Psycho. All have the Legendary prefix of course. LLMs and several Raids have an increased chance of dropping them. Otherwise they are random world drops.
Should have elaborated earlier, sorry.

To add a bit more, the original Legendary class mods, which BlackHeartV listed, are part of the base game and can be found most anywhere you find loot (eg. chests, enemy drops and med vendors). UVHUP2 added 3 new Legendary mods for each class (all Legendary versions of regular mods, like Cat (siren) or Ranger (commando)), and you can only get those from tubbies, starting around level 62. As already mentioned, the original mods are not part of the tubby loot pool, which includes the WTF shield, Bunny launcher, Cracked Sash shield, skins and, starting around 62, the new Legendary mods.

This is the drop (in location - I did not touch it until after the screenshot)…

…trying to remember just what went on in that fight; IIRC, there were the usual random collection of higher-lvl spiderants and bandits; two or three Goliaths and at least one leveled to Badass and may have gone to Super (there was a LOT going on then and keeping up with everything wasn’t easy); a number of runs included Goliath Blasters as well, but I tried to deal with them ASAP and honestly don’t remember if one was seen on this run or not.

My notes say that should be it as far as creatures seen. But I probably should mention that in a run a few days ago I found a dead Tubby that I wasn’t at all aware of before finding the body, and so I may have missed one this time as well. But no body afterward, so I dunno…

Just an update - the real world’s getting in the way and so I may not have the day-run results up until this weekend. Stay tuned!

I´m considering an independent inquiry with the same experimental set-up. For me it´s not so obvious when night starts. Would you mind stopping the time from spawning at Ellie´s to starting a run? Or is there a consistent visible marker for “night has begun” (stars, moon,…;-))

What I’ve been going by is when there are visible stars in the sky.

Just added the day run results along with cheesy screens.

10 isnt really a big enough sample to confirm anything, mind if some of us contribute?

Please do…and you’re right, this is only scratching the surface. It was a random thought to begin with and just kinda made up as it went along.

I’ll try and do a few night/day runs later in the week and post up the results.

Did 30 runs. 20 started at daytime, and 10 started at nighttime. Here are the results.

Daytime:

  1. Loot Goon + Black Queen. 2 more Loot Goons spawned when nighttime began.
  2. Black Queen
  3. Black Queen
  4. Black Queen
  5. Tubby (Leg. Pointman)
  6. Tubby (Leg. Engineer)
  7. Black Queen
  8. Black Queen
  9. Tubby (Leg. Ranger)
  10. Black Queen + Loot Goon
  11. Loot Goon
  12. Black Queen
  13. Black Queen

Nighttime:

  1. Tubby (Leg. Nurse) + Black Queen + Badass Goliath
  2. Badass Goliath
  3. Black Queen
  4. Black Queen
  5. Tubby (Leg. Killer)

I would definetly say that there is no difference in spawns wether it’s night or day. Just your average RNG. I’ve had runs through areas with Loot midgets, and I’ve come up with 3 legendaries from one area on several occasions. I’ve also had playthroughs where badass enemies spawn like crazy. It’s just RNG.

Worth noting in this case is that the Black Queen spawned 11 times out of 30. And that cheap b1tch didn’t drop anything worth writing home about.

Sometime this weekend, I’d like to put overall results (night vs day) up in my OP…with time and participation, I’m hoping to see whether a pattern will become apparent. Or not. I’ll also list/credit participants, 'cause I think they deserve it.

Feel free to add any runs that you have done!
