Recently returned to Borderlands 1 after two great years with BL2. I love collecting guns and reading the forums but I keep seeing references to Mat2 etc. What does it actually mean?
Guns, shields, and class mods (coms) have three different materials that affect their stats. For shields it increases the power of that manufacturer’s effect (health regen, nova when depleted, ect.), for coms mat 2 and 3 add an additional effect to the com. For guns, it just affects the stats; how it affect’s the stats depends on the manufacturer.
Relevant article below! Generally, higher material grade = better stats. I know I saw a table how each manufacturer’s materials effected things once upon a time, but can’t find it now…perhaps someone else remembers where it was.
In short, for weapons you generally want material 3. Possible exceptions: Jakobs (each material is good in its own way) and Hyperion (mat2 gives more fire rate, but mat3 gives more damage). There are other niche things involving special prefixes, but that’s the gist of it.
For COMs, just look for the “5th line” below the skill boosts…no reason to get fancy about it.
For shields, the text gives it away…e.g. quick > slow > very slow health regen.
If I remember correctly… mat two is actually harder to find and thus more sought after because of its rarity. That and mat 2 can be super sexy awesome.
Thanks for the replies, that’s exactly what I was looking for.
For weapons yes, not for shields or COMs. In terms of rarity, Mat1 > Mat2 > Mat3 for those.
