[Build] Heads or Tails -- 50/50 On-Foot/In-Mech

Heads or Tails?

- The odds are 50/50, be prepared for both outcomes

This is Raging Bear build, offering a decent alternative to Blast Master. For those that want to spend 50% of their time on foot, and 50% of their time in Iron Bear. Raging Bear synergizes very nicely with Early Exit builds. When the fuel return of Dead Lines starts to heavily diminish, just hop out!

Skill Tree

Bl3skills.com

To get damage outside of Iron Bear, we put as many points in Stainless Steel Bear and Scorching RPM’s as we can, and then a point in Short Fuse. It’s been proven on the forums there’s a strange synergy with these skills increasing the damage of Short Fuse. It’s important to note that the Class Mod I use below further increases Stainless Steel Bear.

Points in Fire in the Skag Den can be moved elsewhere, or you can move a couple points to max it out. Preference will come into play here.

Class Mod

Raging Bear

Look for a Raging Bear com with as many points in Stainless Steel Bear as possible, and at least 1 or 2 points in Dead Lines. Stainless steel points will increase your DPS, while Dead Lines will greatly extend your IB duration while also reducing your cooldown time (this is imnportant for this build to function). Stoke the Embers won’t add much utility to this build.

Gameplay

Gameplay is very out of date

This video shows the beginning of the Takedown on Mayhem 4 until defeating the Kraken. This build isn’t really designed around Bossing, and is more for Mobbing, however it is still capable of end game content.

Here is a video of the Valkyries (at about 3 minutes in I get distracted by a green enemy health bar, sorry).

The Iron Bear synergy in this build:

  • 5/3 Dead Lines returns substantial fuel on kills
  • Stainless Steel Bear increases Iron Bear damage and maximum fuel
  • Raging Bear increases damage while reducing fuel usage on kills
  • Early Exit at 50% fuel usage allows a much quicker cooldown than full duration
  • Blast Master builds spend significantly less time in Iron Bear for Early Exit Builds
  • Stacking the Gunner Cooldown Shield Anointment, Cooldown Artifact, and Grizzled
  • Using the Big Boom Blaster to refill shields quickly to proc Topped Off

Gear

Shield - Multivitamin Old God, Mendel’s Multivitamin, Multivitamin Band of Sitorak, THICC shield - Look for any +50% Health shield with Kills reduce cooldown anointment. Prioritize the anointment on your shield before all else. Other decent shields are the Big Boom Blaster, Double Downer, Recharger.

Artifact - Look for Last Stand Otto Idol, Snowdrift Otto Idol, or Pearl. For the first 2 look for Mag Size and AoE rolls, for the Pearl look for Magazine Size and Max Health.
Grenade - Cloning Maddening Tracker

Weapons

Ogre - Consecutive Hits anointment
Tevonator, insider, Faisor (underbarrel) or Boom Sickle - Consecutive Hits anointment or Kill Stack anointment
Redline, Quickie, Scourge - 160 Splash anointment

Important Build Notes:

Do not over-use fuel in Iron Bear! Draining to 50% with Raging Bear, >3/3 Dead Lines and >5/5 Stainless Steel Bear is more than enough time for this build.

Proper balance between Iron Bear and Moze will allow you to play very competitively, while enjoying the best each have to offer. There are several other suitable guns to use, the ones listed are just what I have. I recommend getting some elemental splash guns like the Kyb’s or Westergun with the 160% splash boost.

I’ve gotta admit, 5/3 Deadlines returns a lot of fuel.

Yes it really does. Your fuel bar starts out missing 1/3 fuel from SSB, and after 3 kills it’s back to full. Really great workaround for the SSB/SF synergy to maintain an early exit build

No Band of Sitorak?

That shield is crazy good with Iron Bear builds. You get gun damage when it’s down, and insane cooldown from Topped Off when it’s up.

If you haven’t used one, try to get one with the Safe Space (I think thats what it’s called) perk. It has a surprising range and can ragdoll enemies that singularities can’t. They can’t shoot you when they’re eating the floor, and the shield will recharge before they can stand back up. Seriously underrated perk.

The band of sitorak is my favourite shield but it’s currently broken and exploitable so the Big Boom Blaster is the next closest thing.

If they fix it I’ll go back to using it, I’ve been raving about the Sitorak since October.

Edit here’s a better link

Do NOT instant exit with >5/5 Stainless Steel Bear if you intend on getting back in as soon as possible. The fuel gauge bug will severely increase Cooldown Time.

So SSB does increase total fuel but also increases cooldown time on early exit because the fuel bar doesn’t start at full, right? I can’t believe they haven’t fixed this by now. Sucks if you want to run 5+/5 for Short Fuse.

This really bugs me too. I want to use SSB because I want Iron Bear to have as much damage as possible so I can burst down enemies in a pinch. But I also want to be able to jump in and out of the Bear as fast as possible.

I just use 5/5 Grizzled + 30% annointment on my shield to help with that

Yeah it starts your fuel gauge lower (for CDT sake) but you do still get the bonus fuel. It’s a weird bug.

This is why Raging Bear works with it (because of extra Dead Lines and reduced fuel drain with kills), you can fill that part of the bar back up and get a shorter CD when you exit.

To be fair, 5/5 SSB and an instant exit, with Topped Off proccing you’re only losing like a second or 2 max. If your shield gets knocked you lose more though, up to about 10 seconds on an instant exit.

Great build, this is practically my current setup right now. I’ve used this to solo 4 player difficulty Takedown pretty easily, I killed Wotan on foot with a Kybs worth though since Iron Bears damage is pretty inefficient. I use Iron Bear with a massive health pool of 220k to hop into his shields and destroy them, and then exit early to decimate his armor with a corrosive Kybs Worth.

Yeah it’s not a bad build at all. I do find Blast Master is still better, but I made this just for something different. It’s a pretty fun one to play.

I’ve been playing around with this concept some in order to build CapArm rails into it and this is what I came up with. I use an RB com with +2 Deadlines/+3 Stoke the Embers, which when combined with Experimental Munitions, feels like it makes up for the missing points in SSB.

Right now, I am using Boom Sickles with a Pearl, Mendel’s, and a CMT for healing. I’m wondering whether I could spec out of Vampyr entirely by replacing the Pearl and Mendel’s with an Otto Idol and Old God. The main thing holding me back is that I don’t know where to put the 7 points that would save – Click Click and swap out the Boom Sickles for 0 ammo rocket launchers?

Hmm, have you tried relying only on the Otto Idol to keep IB alive?

My guess is easier content will be fine, but regular takedown might be a huge struggle.

I would say though, if it works you could either do 0 ammo (big concept change) or get sabot rounds.

The point is not keep IB alive forever, just long enough to do a decent amount of mobbing. I’ve cleared the TTD once with that build – including a 3 minute Wotan kill – but I have this feeling that I am not approaching it in the most efficient way possible.

Well, not keeping him alive will make the DL + RB duration increase / cooldown benefit not really work the same. I’m sure you could make the build work, but you’ll be getting full duration cooldowns if IB dies before you can eject.

It happens on occasion, but the amount of mob control you get with two CapArm rails is totally worth the trade off. Here is a 17 minute clear of the TTD using a 50/50 CapArm Raging Bear:

Yeah since the IB damage buff, I think in general I should update this build. Though the principal should still hold up.

I would’ve thought IB would still die here though, sheesh.

Watching your gameplay I’d attribute what you’re doing to the Sickle and Pearl and not bear or the com. If you applied the exact same strat with a Blast Master I think you’d better your time.

The benefit of Raging Bear is uptime and you’re not getting that with double Cap Arm.

Sure – Specialist Bear is probably doing the same amount of lifting as the RB com and extra points in SSB. I’m still experimenting with the build concept though – perhaps a 50/50 Sapper Bear with double CapArms?

Yeah I was kind of thinking the same thing. Using bear for such a short amount of time I was wondering if he could do it quicker without bothering.

I would just recommend trying 1 cap arm with 1 sabot. Trust me it’s an imba combo. You will get a lot more out of your Raging setup then.
