[Guide] Personal Space - Range, Math, etc - You can even snipe with it ;)

The screenshots below show the maximum range for Personal Space that still grants a bonus.

Those are my test results for damage per rank of Personal Space:

  • Base damage: 1176
  • 1/3 PS: 1379 - +17,3%
  • 2/3 PS: 1582 - +34,5%
  • 3/3 PS: 1785 - +51,8%

So, yeah, it is, in fact, 18% per rank instead of the 12% stated on the card. Keep in mind that Personal Space is multiplicative. The more gun and elemental damage bonuses you stack on top of it the more potent each point in PS becomes.

It also seems to use a linear function in order to calculate the bonus based on the distance to a target. At 50% of the range shown in the screenshots above it should give 50% of the skill’s bonus damage.

That’s way farther than I would have guessed the maximum distance would be, thanks!

Do you know if it is in fact 18% or 12% per rank?

What’s the drop off like? Would it be possible to see the distances at which you see (roughly) 66% and 33% efficacy, for example?

I had to go through my archive of screenshot and videos I recorded when I ran those tests. Those were the results:

  • Base damage: 1176
  • 1/3 PS: 1379 - +17,3%
  • 2/3 PS: 1582 - +34,5%
  • 3/3 PS: 1785 - +51,8%

So, yeah, it is in fact ~18% per rank.

I don’t have any exact numbers but judging based on the test I used to determine the max distance (I shot a bullet every step back I took) it seems to be linear. So it should have 50% efficiency at half of the distance shown above.

A part of me wants to say that’s absurd, but nothing about the description says anything about maximum distance, so that’s just me assuming it has to be Shotgun range. Still, once we get a level cap upgrade, that will be something that I look at putting points into.

Depending on the build if you can afford one point into it, I would do it.

Are you cool if I do a video test like this and give you tons of credit of course?

A lot of people don’t come here and I would like to cast a wider net on this

Sure, go ahead, no credits necessary. I’m just happy to help people to make better informed decisions.

Get on with your bad self, thanks!

What’s this?

There doesn’t seem to be quite the same amount of, eh, in-depth game mechanic discussions as I recall from BL2 (though I may be looking at that through the lens of nostalgia and years of play, where BL3 is like a month old). At least one of the developers was on the (old) forums for BL2 describing how to edit the .ini files for different rendering engine use and some other things, and I recall much discussion about how different guns worked, mechanics, that sort of thing. Now it seems to be largely three parties: new sign ups venting about a game issue, people looking to trade for gear, and a handful of us lurking here socially.

The Level Cap Increase is wild speculation on my part, but seems a safe bet, given that they’ve done it in every game. Presequel doesn’t count, as the studio got shut down pretty quickly. Also, I’ve heard nothing specifically saying it won’t happen like I have with new characters, so I’m optimistic.

Well when BL2 released, 2012, and BL1, 2009, social media wasn’t was it is today. YouTube was still big, but not nearly to the degree it is now. I think that’s why having well informed people like @Derch make videos is a good thing. It really helps spread the information around.

Yeah it takes a bit for that to start happening.

Someone recently basked Chuck about it and he had the proper response, not verbatim bit basically im just playing and learning the game right now"

No target dummy doesn’t help

That’s weird, right? Have you found something suitable in its place? In BL2, for example, that one ceiling-mounted turret in Opportunity would work (for melee or long-distance stuff), but I haven’t sunk my teeth far enough into BL3 to comfortably say, ‘I got nothin’.

USE KEVIN!

Spread the word.

Nice thread. I was actually looking for info about this skill. I was wondering if focusing my Amara build primarily around elemental shotgun dmg would be good and was curious how this skill actually worked. It looks like this works way better than I was thinking it would. Thanks info.

Legendary shotguns can get pretty nutty and Amara is so tanky she can get right up in their face.

Exactly what I was thinking. I’m only level 30 and already sort of doing this with just an epic shotgun and no points in personal space.
