If you go here

you will find these
MaxMultisamples=16
Bloom=True
UseHighQualityBloom=True
MotionBlur=True
DepthOfField=True
AmbientOcclusion=True
FogVolumes=True
AllowD3D10=True
which can lead on a merry adventure, trying to squeeze better graphics from this old game.
The differences aren’t profound; they don’t hit you over the head. For that reason, I’m trying to find out if anyone ever bothered putting together before & after screenshots to illustrate differences.
And this is a small selection of possible changes; a web search will reveal many more. But no screen shots—not as far as I can tell.
Quite a shame this stuff is only accessed via a config tweak many will never bother to try.
I don’t think you can actually force it to DX10. For the other stuff it does help just not much except for FogVolumes which is awesome “indoors”.
If you’re looking for other graphical tweaks, ShadowFilterQualityBias can be tweaked for overall better shadows (or at least “sharper” shadows). The higher the number the sharper it his although it appears numbers above 4 don’t actually improve it any further.
Something else you can do is change the MinShadowResolution and the MaxShadowResolution values to try and make them also less blocky.
Right. It’s an Unreal engine game, which was really, really bad at rendering shadows at the time. I remember having fits about the ones in Skyrim.
So, the DX10 command doesn’t actually work? Why is it in the WIKI?
Skyrim’s can be made better via similar editing (wholescenedominant shadows or something similarly named. Be warned though that raising it too much will lower your fps significantly. You can also change the shadowcast settings to lower values which will cause shadows to not be cast as far which should ease some strain)
Placebo effect mostly I think (whenever I check which version it thinks it’s running in it says DX9 even when I try to force it via the .ini edit or STEAM property command editing)
