Aside from the 3 in 1 versatility of the Avalanche, it sure seems like it!

There is no “Best Shield,” only the shield that best suites your purpose, build, or playstyle.

Well, Claptrap, Wilhelm, and Aurelia benefit from low capacity shields, but yes, the Shield of Ages is sweet.
Mr Pangolin, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Is it the best ? By most standards, yes probably.

Sure some characters and builds have other needs, but as a generic shield, it’s 100% better than it’s normal purple and Legendary version, it has no real downside to speak of, it’s easy to farm (it has fixed parts) and it offers the best overall value in terms of number of points of total health+shield of all shields in the game.

So while this is totally true, and the genuine best answer to this question:

It’s also true that it’s one of the best overall choice in the game, all other things being equal.
