Radiation too weak?

I cannot help but feel like Radiation is the weakest of the elements right now. I very much could be wrong on this. However I think at best it is the least noticeable element. I get that the idea is that it would be really effective against groups of enemies, which BL3 has a great approach of higher difficulty=more enemies, rather than bullet sponge single enemies. However, along with more enemies the enemy combat AI was updated. Since many enemies seek different cover or creatures simply take a moment to move sideways in relation to the player in order to attack from different angles, enemies dont mindlessly bunch up as much as they did in BL2. So even if you infect an enemy with radiation, the aura often does not do much to the other enemies. Even if enemies are grouped together I never really notice if one radiation aura is doing much, since I am spray and praying in the group anyways. Most of the time I prefer fire in these situations. I may be misreading the situation, but I feel like fire has better DOT in general. Even the radiation explosions after death does not seem to do that much additional damage. Maybe 2-3 bullets worth of damage it seams like to me. In BL2 I could get a seance of what element was good when. Fire against red health, shock against shields, corrosive against armor, slag best fit multiplayer against high HP enemies. The same rules for fire shock and corrosive still work, Cryo is effective against most mob type enemies, but radiation I am struggling to find a fitting place. Sure, radiation against groups of enemies on paper, however since radiation offers no additional damage bonus, only a damage reduction against armor, and most enemies are red health only, fire seems to completely dominate in this situation. Maybe this is already considered, as I see a lot of radiation element damage and rarely any fire damage. But I feel like all elements should have a clear advantage, and I just feel like anytime you would like radiation, you would notice fire damage much more.

If I was to offer a balance change idea, this would be it. Radiation dealing +10% to red health and/or radiation aura damage affecting red health through shields. Say 1 shot of radiation type with a 10% chance of radiation DOT hits an enemy with shields and health, the shot itself does only base damage against the shield, but if the DOT triggers, the red health takes damage instead of the shield. In this case, fire is still the best against red health, shock is still the best against shields, but radiation would hit a kind of middle ground. Great for people who dont want to think about the elemental damage at all.

Entire reason I bring it up is because I was using a Maliwan SMG with cryo and radiation and it seemed like the cryo was clearly better even if radiation offers better DOT on paper, even against a group during the creature slaughter quest.

I could have sworn that Irradiated enemies where supposed to take bonus damage from all sources. Apparently not.

they do but its so minor other elements’ bonuses out weigh it. cryo is one of the best imo. it’s just better version of corrosive too less negatives

dont encroach fire imo. i rather if the dot ends it damages enemies less over time and stacks. so if it deals 10 for a dot every second maybe it deals 3 or so after the main dot ends and stacks over time. so if another dot is applied and allows to end it deals 6 after that until it maxes out the same dot.
also make the explosion area bigger or permanently irradiated

I love Radiation Damage, it’s great for lazy Players like me.
I don’t wanna switch Weapons all the Time.
So i use a Recurring Hex RAd Grenade, an Itchy Flacker and an Artifact with Radiation Aura and Luck.
Sure, Fire does more Damages to most of the Mobs, but its rather good to replace Shock and so i use only my Grenade and my Flacker.
As Universalelement i like it.
And you can melt everything with it…just the lazy Way.

I’ve got a Radiation Shotty that makes the bad guys EXPLODE and the pellets splash all over the place…

Try a Maliwan Shockwave with radiation, I just love them for groups, multikills everytime and those screams and the explosions taking others with them. :smiling_imp:

I get that radiation shines most against groups. But how often do enemies group up close? It seems like to me the AI does a better job of spreading out during the fight than previous games. And honestly to me it just seems like all of the elements DOT effects just are not that effective in general. the damage that the DOT does in a second vs the per second damage of just shooting the enemy just does not come close the vast majority of time. And even a single enemy can shred your HP if you are not careful. Leaving an infected enemy alive long enough for the aura DOT to matter just does not seem as effective as dropping them as quick as possible. I think Radiation just needs some more raw damage bonuses. I was also thinking maybe the aura DOT to damage red health past enemy shields, but I imagine that would be a programing nightmare to get to work right.

Which one?

it’s a purple Tediore

Pretty sure radiation was meant to be weaker overall, just so it can be used with elem dmg+ modifiers. The others are definitely stronger, but they are only stronger against specific health bars. "For when you really need to bust a cap without using lead. Radiation, state of the art.’’
