Versatile Characters

So, did anyone try to create a versatile character? A character that can do good with everything and use all (or most) COMs?

Personally, my success was with Claptrap. I removed MP skills though, because I am mainly a lone wolf, also I removed melee skills because I don’t like melee much.

You are describing Timothy.

Can you make something like this with him though?

I edited it a bit when I am playing, so this is out of date a bit.

I would think that Athena could easily fit in as a “versatile character.” At level 70, just 'spec into Wrath of the Goddess and Blood Rush. With the rest of the points, throw some or all of them in Ceraunic Storm, and you got a tanky melee fighter who can diss out madd elemental AoE damage, and provide some nominal support to the rest of the team (Vanguard, United Front, Clear!).

I just got my Willy to 50 and I’ve found him to be, while not standout exactly in anything besides tanking, to be pretty versatile across the board.

You can make him into a pretty decent high damage glass cannon shotgun wielding maniac, go defense crazy, or have your pets draw much enemy firw while you plunk away from a safe distance.

I found Clappy to be very versatile as well, but his innate randomness detracted from that.

I havent played Timmy, Nisha or Jack except for very briefly for a while (looking forward to picking up their UVHMs soon though) but i do remember Jack as being probably the most versatile across the board, as @Impala said.

He has some interesting skill synergies but I wouldn’t really describe him as versatile. He has no melee function and no support role aside from aggro. In typical Jack fashion, it’s all about him.

This is what I am running on Clappy:

Clappy! by Mohamed2281, on Flickr

This works with most COMs, allows him to be a really good character, and involves most, if not all the Vaulthunter.EXE Packages.

I removed some melee abilities though, because I am not much of a fan of melee with Clappy. I liked Hyperion Punch in NVHM and in the early stages of TVHM, but after that, it became weak. The melee subroutine did not work out with Tripleclocked, since the cons on your guns is too high.

I don’t play coop much so I didn’t invest in coop skills.

For Wilhelm, I am running this: And I think it’s pretty versatile, actually:

I am interested to see your builds.

Well, the shock laser thingy is a nice shield stripper, but I removed it after I got a Thunderfire.

This is what I’m running with Jack now:

I don’t use HOTS class mods, I’d rather kill my pets over and over again.
With that spec, I have many options.

Best Man: Grenades/Tediore reloads. Plus Bomber.
Celestial for general play.
Projection for Hyperion weapons. Plus eddie or support relay
CEO for Jakobs/raiding and tough situations.
Entrepreneur for sniping with the Rerouter. Amp on every shot. Plus Eddie.

I can also use any shield. Mainly Shied of Ages/Rerouter/Bulwark/nova shields.

I mainly use the quasar for jack, since its hyperion and i have company man anyway. But I do use fire bee for mobbing indoors, and BP outdoors. If i’m not going with Tediore reloads.

No Badass Digi Jacks?

Jack can make anything do anything. No other character can compete in versatility.

Can’t melee.

Maybe he can be built with a melee/nova/spike setup using the Avalanche. Could work, I think.

Well, yeah, but other characters get better melee stats.

Clappy can have over 150% melee damage (only with triple clocked, otherwise it’s at 150% and more if you invest in the Bee skill), a super awesome (not really) Hyperion punch, etc.

Aurelia can have a backhand slap which does 2.3 million damage.

Wilhelm can have a badass powerfist. I won’t comment more on it, but I will quote MR. TORGUE:

“WELCOME TO ROBOT PUNCHING CITY. POPULATION: EVERYONE’S FACES!!!”

Nisha can shoot lightning!!! (OK, this isn’t awesome, but still)

Athena can make enemies bleed and explode when bleeding. She also gets healed by this. And she also has an override skill which make you dash for enemies, deal epic melee damage and gain increased chance to make them bleed/explode.

Jack can… punch and… shoot… lasers… What does shooting lasers have to do with melee? The lasers are also mid range, so they can be used like beam lasers, except they’re more accurate.

Don’t get me wrong though, the lasers are AMAZING shield strippers. But still.

Athena. Awesome res ability and other co-op features, great defense and offense. Has COMs which turn the same build into a different playstyle (dragon with overload and fire guns in atmosphere, storm with unrelenting, defender with conduit and superconductor, etc)
Maelstrom is great against bosses, hades is okay against crowds, and great melee and mobility to boot.
