Proposed Zane buffs/changes

I love Zane and his complexity, but it has been frustrating – both the fact his skills are a minefield of useless skills that don’t work properly, or having to meet his various requirements for skills when other vault hunters can just point and shoot for better bonuses (and this is outside of the ridiculous broken/over-resourced skills like Moze’s means of destruction/Vampyr/drowning in brass/phalanx and Fl4k’s Fade away/guerrilla in the mist/leave no trace/head count).

These are my thoughts for Zane streamlining his abilities:

Barrier tree

Really needs some damage. This is the only defensive tree so weak in offence on purpose (compare it to Amara’s brawl tree or Moze’s shield redistribution). It should have high reward especially as it’s requirements call for maintaining your shield up, which is much harder than say Fl4k’s need to be high health. My thoughts for the damage it should be crit-based, so Zane presents as an expert build (avoid damage, hit crit points).

Rise to the occasion – should be switched with ready for action , so that non-shield users can exploit the 5% health regen without investing in shield skills

Confidence Competence – should have crit damage bonus on top of its others

Best served cold – the nova damage and radius is so negligible that increasing skills towards this is pointless. It should have increased vulnerability damage bonus to those cryo’d/slowed, so that it boosts cryo build damage, and also adds to the team support aspect.

Nerves of steel – again add on crit damage bonus. Again this is rewarding you for never getting hit, which is the hardest requirement in the game. You should have been rewarded damage as such

Retaliation augment - 20% damage bonus, as your barrier doesn’t get hit all the time, and 10% is like nothing.

Digi-clone tree

Really the main fix is for it to work properly, particularly double barrel . It is meant to be powerful, but because of the ridiculous amount of damage penalty to the clone, as well as the various bugs to the clone firing it properly, it comes off incredibly weak.

Borrowed time – increased duration 3 to 4%. You should have some benefits from a single ability, which at the moment adds only about 2 seconds for 5 points (ridiculous)

Donnybrook – needs max health regen not missing health, the regen amount is laughable

Duct tape mod – should be 3/3 skill, higher percentage, reduced cooldown and make first 25% of magazine to proc to make it viable, as the only people investing in this are unlikely to be using the 3 grenade consumption for the clone (note fractal frags and drone grenade are both completely free, I’ve checked). At this point it isn’t reliable at 5 points.

Supersonic man – 5% bonus instead of 4% per point, again should have enough reward for single ability use so far down the tree

Hitman tree

Really the bonuses are too weak for kill skill requirements, and seems to already depend on death follow’s close to make it just below average. Should really achieve its goal of kill skill blitz with a stacking mechanic i.e. up to 3-4 stacks with diminishing returns. This could be added on Death follows close and Seeing red capstones.

Drone – cooldown reduced from 60 sec to 45 sec, don’t know why the cooldown was increased so much for its damage output. It should also have some scaling attached to it e.g. to movement speed.

Cold bore – a really useless skill at the moment. Should be 3/3 skill, increased cryo damage with it applying to first 25% of magazine to be usable.

Playing dirty – should have a bonus on levelling of additional shots proccing e.g. 5 shots becomes 9 at 5/5

Thus for Zane he would present more as the expert tree options:

Barrier tree – relying on crits with maintaining full shield

Drone tree – blitz stacking kill skills at high speed

Digiclone tree – 2 ability management, whether to combine for burst or time it.

With options available for cryo and grenade builds.

Would welcome your thoughts, but I feel it needs to be continuously reported, as all the popular streamers are just showing off Fl4k/Moze/Amara and it won’t be talked about.

Yes! Totally agree, Zane needs buffs and badly. Also you’re right about absent of zane content. It would be interesting to see a poll result know about what VHs people are playing. I’m pretty sure Zane is at the bottom and by far

Totally agree with most of yur points. Zane is even with a powerfull gear the weakest VH by far.

Personaly i would like to see a skill or an extention of skill, perhaps’Double barrel" that gives you and your clone an damage increase if both of you fires at the same target.

in Additional i have realized that some of his skills don’t work properly. For example ‘Adrenaline’. I have testet it with a class mod that gives me 4 additional points in this skill, so your skill cooldown should be reduced by 63% at full shields. But the drone cooldown is still far more than 30 seconds. Same problem with ‘violent momentum’ what in my opinion don’t work properly with the totally speed increase.

Hope Gearbox will fix the bugs and will take some skill improvements. At the moment the damage gap between Zane and Fl4k is higher than graham’s number

Waiting for buffs/fixes before i continue playing Zane. Knowing how long it took before fixing maya in bl2 it will take i while. And drop rates om normal mode is horribel.

I would like barrier capstone say something like on kill u regen 30% shield over 3s even if you take damage u continue to regen. That and maybe when u activate a shield regen it goes uninterrupted for 5s even on receiving damage, so the 1pter (cant remember bame) in double agent that regens shield on swap for example. Would also like to see a 1pt grenade usage skill in this tree. Maybe when someone shoots the shield has a chance to launch one.

I love the kill skill blitz idea, for double agent, I would like double barrel to spawn 2 clones with your gun giving the 20% weapon dmg as well

Zane does feel underpowered, his capstone skills aren’t worth getting down to at all imo. You can’t just focus on making him good with one thing, which is what people are getting wrong. You need to make it so Zane can use anything and everything effectively. He is a Jack of all, King of none character. I would like to see some more synergies with his skills though, and have Zane have a defined role as a vault hunter.

Fl4K gets a 25% damage bonus at half health for 3 points, which really is pretty much full up time in regular gameplay. For Zane he does benefit from his barrier, but he’s still vulnerable to melee, splash damage etc. so it does take effort to keep up.

Also note cooldown reduction is a rate, same in borderlands 2 i.e. it is 1/1+cooldown rate e.g. +50% cooldown rate is 1/1.5 = 2/3. It means there is diminishing returns, so once you get around 30% cooldown rate it isn’t worth adding more. This is why it hurts alot to have cooldown at 60 sec for the drone, you can’t decrease it much further.

I totally agree that he needs to buffed. But I wouldn’t make too complicated. They just need to get rid of the nerfs he received. Put him back into his original state. He suffered massive nerfs.

-etc.
Quite ridiculous compared to the other classes.

His biggest nerf was them changing Violent Violence and Donnybrook so they did not stack. Just changing that alone would make him much better already.

Yes this is also a very good point and idea. Making these 2 skills stackable again would help a lot.

Honestly the change I think that would help the most is Death Follows Close being both “on Activating an action skill” + “or on Action Skill reset” - if you could refresh kill skills with CCC we would have at least one great build. Has good sustain with the two forms of lifesteal and ok burst with playing dirty.

Or at least make it so I can cancel both drone and shield early. Otherwise Im stuck waiting for those skills to end before I can get burst/sustain.
