After a long time away from BL2 because of TPS and another games I’ve decided to come back and get my Platinum trophy. Axton was my first VH so I decided to pick him again, but I havent quite finished my build.

My gear is a Purple Ranger COM with +5 to Impact and boosting mag size and critical damage in the card.
For shield I use basically everything. Axton is a VH designed for shield tanking, so there is no wrong here. Usually this slot is filled with the Antagonist.
Magic Missile is my Grenade of choice because I do not go down to Double Up, so I need some reliable slag tools - Shield and Grenade.
For guns, Omen is my main damage dealer with some Tediore for back up that I usually chuck (PC and E-tech pistols).
But, my question is: what should be better spec with the 5 points left? Ranger and Nuke or Grit and Double Up?
Also, I thought about taking 2 points from Onslaught to maximize Battlefront and Steady. Would it be better for the overall damage output of the build?
If you want to reach double up, which you should, you can’t have both ranger and grit.
You need to use blue ranger com.
If you only want your turrets for distraction, no need for double up and u can play with purple ranger.
Grit, at 5/5, has saved my life on countless occasions.
This skill saved me from going down the first time I managed to kill Pete. My shield was gone, my health was gone, my DPUH was out of ammo. The only thing I had was a Conference Call. Grit procced multiple times in a row (as I had DOT on me from his Novas) and saved my life. Switch to the CC, boom, he’s gone. I had to thank the proc Gods for that one.
Double Up is infinitely useful.
With a loadout that includes The Bee, a DPUH and an Explosive Fastball, I have no weapons that slag. The slag application is without a doubt one of the moat useful skills that Axton has. The only time I use slag weapons is if my turrets are down during a boss fight, thus making Double Up an excellent skill for both mobbing and boss fights. It allows you to use whatever weapon you like all the time, rather than the old “slag, switch, slag, switch” style of gameplay.
As a Gaige player I can play without a skill to slag for me. Magic Missile x4 and Antagonista fill this role with no problems at all, so I do not need to waste points to get Double Up.
OK, Able is kinda useful and Onslaught is ok but in my opinion Steady and Do or Die adds a lot more with my gear.
I dont get to Double Up at all, as said, so my doubt is where to spec my last points. I already thought that Grit and Gemini would be more useful overall than Ranger and Nuke (Life saver + agro drawn vs 4% buff in somethings + knockback with huge cooldown).
Now, past this, my doubt is what to do with the Onslaught points. Do I keep the points there for the mov speed boost or do I fill Steady, Battlefront and Metal Storm? Also, with Gemini, I use to spec Mag-Lock so I can place the first turret in a safe spot while I can redeploy the second one every time it is destroyed.
Onslaught is sub-par in my opinion, so I want to find a better place for the 4 points. Also, Im leaving just one point in Ranger for the COM bonus so it turns in 5% buffs for just one point.
According to Blut, losing an additive 6% is not a big deal, so don’t worry about filling out Steady and Battlefront. If you want mag lock, take a point from something else and put it there. Able is great for no other reason than free health regen just for shooting an enemy.
Yeah, losing the additional damage from Onslaught isnt a big deal indeed but Battlefront gives me more than it. It gives me gun damage and grenade damage, what boots my guns with splash even further.
Steady isnt only grenade damage, its recoil reduction too. And I play mid range with Axton, so some recoil reduction isnt that bad.
Also, there is no place to take point from to spec in Mag-Lock. All the skills in Survival are important for me.
If you don’t mind my asking- why the L. Ranger com instead of the L. Soldier or L. Engineer? I imagine a lot of that comes down to play style and weapon preference? I’d offer my build advice but since I tend to go with Gemini and Double Up…
Yeah, the Legendary Ranger COM has nothing special in my opinion. Ranger is a meh skill that I only spec because of the COM bonus, Onslaught is sub-par at best and because of the mov speed and I do not need Metal Storm past level 3 (or 2 when I use the Ranger COM with boost to fire rate) because of console fire rate cap. Quick Charge is another skill that does not need to be speced past 3 because it is only useful against DoT ticks. Also, Impact is boosted by the Tina Ranger COM too.
So I lose some sub-par skills points to get Grit, the best Axton skill, and really awesome card boosts. I usually go with mag size and critical damage because I use Tediore and Jakobs a lot with Axton, but you can have boost to fire rate too with either critical or mag size. Every possible combination improves DPS!
Metal storm depends
If you like blockhead and omen, rubi and dpuh.
Max out grenade and gun damage if you not using bee. Unless your BAR is more than 40% each.
All maliwan Black hole is best shield for axton, you would be surprised how good it is, extra dps and superb survivability.
Anyway do what you like as long as he can kill stuffs and survirve.
