Dear Gearbox, regarding recent loot Nerfs (outdated)

EDIT: outdated, please continue here: Dear Gearbox, HOW to FIX Loot!

Hey there gearbox, its nice to see that you are paying attention to recent events and what people are doing in your game. the game is AMAZING and a 9.9/10 so far for me.
although I totally agree with all the changes in todays hotfix (19.09.2019 european time) I do have some major concerns about this.

Borderlands 2 is THE best game ever made, it has everything everyone ever wanted, besides the story, the villain and the loot, for me and many others the long years of fun came from one thing, interesting builds and HOW can we break the game.
Breaking the game and get huge benefits out of it, is what MAKES borderlands as a series SO FUN!
I get it that you dont want us to farm a loot tink, a ugly rat or a giant tree over and over and over and over and over… again… I get that. BUT, borderlands was always about me making my own rules playing the game how I want to play it… IF you take away the farm I found and enjoyed, AT LEAST give us a more interesting and fun way to get this loot.

In comparison, the Trials are extremly fun and kinda tough, why not make them more rewarding? because right now you can go in there, sometimes you get ONE totally random legendary or even sometimes none, even at mayhem 3 in 5 minutes… gives us MORE insentive to play these, give us GURANTEED legendary even if you complete it on mayhem 1 in 10 minutes ( because all people can do that) and scale it from there, in mayhem 3 if I clear it in 5 minutes give me AT LEAST a guranteed legendary and then a VERY high chance to get a second or even third one, so I feel rewarded for what Im doing!

Or you know, just let me farm my loot on a boss or tink, as we did for 7 years with no complaints.

now to the shotgun nerf, dont know if it worked as inteded or if it was bugged… but nerfs are always bad! yes it was to strong, but dont be like the big PvP balance companies and nerf everything everytime we find something fun that can quickly kill… people will be scared to share their build if they think “oh no, if I tell anyone it will get nerfed” that is NOT the mentallity a borderlandsplayer ever had, because we never feared nerfs, because you guys are cool! so stay cool, and dont nerf anything just because it is strong…

oh, but nerf pipebomb please…

nerfs just dont sound good and make me scared for the future… please keep it to a minimum and only fix stuff that really breaks the game, like the respec actionskill cooldown bug, or augments not applying until you relog on amara.

TL;DR: dont nerf everything that is fun (not saying you did, just concerned), only brokes stuff needs nerfs.
and if you take my loot farms away, give me more reasonable spots to get the loot I desire.

EDIT: I know that none of these farms are dead, thats not what I am saying, and yes you still get WAY more loot in this game than in every other before that, 5 legendarys from one tree kill IS to much. I just want to say this before it becomes a problem, and I think now is the time to adress it, dont overnerf the game, or you will lose what makes borderlands borderlands, and that is insanely broken â– â– â– â– !

EDIT2: Another important factor right now is, there is little to no insentive to farm other enemys… it seems like all the guns can drop randomly anywhere… I know most bosses still have a specific legendary attached to them, but why only one? why not spread lotttables out more?

For example (JUST example):
make the butcher and the lucian’s call a lootpool item from that one specific boss on pandora, make the lyuda and the Dictator a specific drop from that one zero target in promethea… give more diffrent enemys more diffrent legendarys that they can drop, so we can kill a variaty of enemys to get the loot we desire, not a single rat or tree for a random chance at everything, make troy drop A specific class mod of every class so you can farm your class that you really want on troy, and the other on a random sir hammerlok target, spread it out!
Right now I Really just want to farm for a better hex grenade… but there is NO way for me to do so, because there is no enemy in the game who actually has a real chance to drop me one… because every mob can! and also every other thing… I want specific enemys for specific items, and since there are more items then enemys, make each unique enemys drop 2-5 different things, easy as that…

EDIT:
so here is another suggestion:

  • first off all, still spread out the loot pool so diffrent bosses drop about ~5 fixed legendarys in their pool
  • there are so many rare mobs in this game right? why not implement an invisible timer that says: if you were not in a region for maybe an hour, all rare-spawns will guarantee spawn.

so you can basically play some kind of “farm train” as we see it in othher mmo, where you kill a bunch of diffrent bosses in a group running a line from boss to boss. this can be really fun too.
so you start in lectra farm wick and worty, one punch and all the the other guys, then hop into the next map and kill the rares here…

sure it would not be as efficent as boss farming, BUT it would do two things:

  • let you play in another way
  • AND have new players or just palyers randomly running by always see a cool character and have a have a cool little fight!

I am on the side of the loot nerfs being entirely unnecessary and actually harming to a majority of player’s experiences. They already had an amazing system in place for hardcore loot grinders in weapon parts and anointed weapons.

Having tons of drops was okay because the casual player would have gotten the golden named weapon and left it at that to go on to enjoy their loot. The hardcore grinder would have a better chance rolling for perfect gear.

Now the hardcore grinders will have a difficult time farming for the weapon/item they want from this gigantic worldwide loot pool. let alone a perfect roll.

Also let’s not kid ourselves. The dudes who spend hundreds of hours on this game(myself included) to grind out the best gear and multiple characters are the vast minority. This mainly hurt the people who don’t flock to things like forums alongside their gameplay and will now likely not receive a legendary through their single playthrough of the story. aka the silent majority.

Maybe you shouldn’t brag on the internet and social media about loot drop rate if you don’t want GBS to nerf them. I feel like this is 100% the fault of the Borderlands community. They got exactly what they were asking for. Maybe the OP didn’t ask for it the majority has spoken

@fogboundturtle sorry I think you completly missed the point here
no one is a at fault here, no harm was done, these changes were good, they just should not become a regularity

What I’m saying is a counterpoint to exactly that. I don’t believe the change was good. I do agree it shouldn’t be a regularity though. Cycles of buff/nerf are extremely exausting for the dev team and the players. We were okay with totally OP Sal and got over it and played different Sal builds. We can do it again. Nerfing/Buffing just takes away stuff that some people enjoy and other people avoid until people just give up.

People are exaggerating this whole loot nerf. Isn’t it just for mayhem 3? The rate in other modes is still crazy generous.

I completly agree, but I do like some changes, and even some buffs should be considered.

Like zane getting some love, Iron bear getting some love, as they are AT BASE clearly undertuned… why does my clone do zero damage with a flakker or butcher or lyuda while I obliterate with it? why is it so weak? why does the drone do no damage and why can’t I scale it in ANY way besides making it throw a grenade…

why does iron bear have THREE whole skillpoints just to make him last longer? if you need 3 talents just to make him EXIST, maybe there is a problem with your base stats? like duration and cooldowns are way to high? why not increase base duration and reduce cooldown and then give us only 2 skillpoints for duration and one that actually makes it stronger and scale?
Why do I have talents that work on moze and make here stronger, but then they dont affect iron bear? is it not part of her? is she not moze anymore while in a mech?

Borderlands 3 is not perfect, and I am not complaining at all, this is all VERY exaggerated criticism, the game is AMAZING! these are just very little tiny things that bug me so far.

Yah BL3 has been a blast so far. I’m just scared of the precedent this hotfix might set where gearbox gets into a habit of knee jerking out a hotfix too quickly and potentially not going back on it once people calm down and realize it was okay anyway.

@PlayMyTrapCard I would want to pin this comment, because you hit the nail on the head

In regards to the loot drop nerfs. Some of the things they nerfed were in a way an exploit and was literally pasted all over the internet. There are some other things they should hopefully be working on as well. Pipebomb from what I’ve seen is broken OP. There’s also an exploit people are using to glitch exp gain to insane levels to rack up guardian ranks ridiculously fast.

Yah the individual loot nerfs like chupa and loot midgets were seen a mile away. The mayhem 3 nerf is the worrisome one since it affected everything and people are getting arguably better results farming without mayhem.

Pipe bomb is straight busted and will probably need a code fix so it wouldn’t have been touched in a hotfix. I’ve heard talk of a full rework just to avoid the whole issue in the future.

I can tell you that the loot nerf is not just mayhem 3. They lied. I am on my second toon at level 18 and now in 3 levels have never seen a purple or legendary. Boss fights are all green and 1 blue, red chests are all green, loot caches for typhoon logs are all green maybe 1 blue. There is no incentive for me to do the challenges to get the same green gear from any other enemy. There is no incentive for me to finish all the optional missions now. I agree it was a little ridiculous how many legendaries you got early but doing killavolt and getting all greens is really dumb and lazy game design. Now i just hope Division 2 fixes their game so i can go back to playing that.

I really hope this isn’t true, because the BL3 loot drop rate was perfect in the base game. This was the first Borderlands game where loot was actually constantly interesting, whereas BL2 drops were garbage 98% of the time and usually majorly outshined by quest-specific rewards.

I do honestly feel like Zane is underpowered now having played his character almost all the way through. I’m a bit disappointed in his output. The skills are good, its just the effects are underpowred for most of them in my opinion.

^ This 100%. I was finally have a blast with the new drop rate BL3 had instituted over BL2 and vending machine rolls. Man, it was so much fun. Even though I passed on 90% of the blues and purples it was at least awesome to SEE them and examine their stats to find out if they are worth using. Now I feel like I’m in a sea of useless green.

Nope, the nerf was to all Mayhem modes by the looks of it - and from my own impressions has also bled over into non Mayhem modes.

Feeling like BL2 pre-buff right now.

You know I haven’t played him, but as I was looking over his trees it just seemed to me that he is built to be very bursty and dependant on having 2 action skills out at the same time.

He was going to be my next playthrough once I max Amara, but after reading this sentiment a lot maybe I’ll run Moze.

Can confirm, loot droprates in Normal have been gutted, despite what patch notes say.

Why, why, why?

I had to turn off one of those action skills so I could use my grenades at my own pace when I wanted. And so I found I ended up wanting grenades every time I had a second action skill equipped and vise versa. So in the end the Digi-Clone + grenades win and the SNTNL lost. It is good though because I was able to put all my skill points in to one action skill now and concentrate on that which has been extremely rewarding.

If this is a legit thing where they shadow nerfed it, which happens in the gaming industry frequently, then shame on them. I’m still hoping I just had a bad couple of plays where I got crap loot and we’re imagining it. Or that’s my hope at least.
