Mutator Arena appreciation post

Can we all agree the Claptastic Voyage DLC brought us the best arena we’ve ever fought in? The mobbing in the Claptrap DLC in general is already very fun, with lots of new enemies and mechanics, but everything all at once in the Cortex is both very challenging and diverse. Of course, it can be difficult at times, but then you just have to lower the slice level! Also control on wether or not you want to go the extra mile to get the silver chest with a bad mutator or settle for a red chest with a better mutator is just a really cool feature. The right mutators also give you an incentive to use weapons you normally wouldn’t use as much and see them shine just as much as the shotguns and lasers!

They’re also the perfect length, three waves per round, increasing in difficulty, lots of badasses, … And when you do finish a round, you get two really good chests. Example 1:

Example 2:

Some left mutators, like the ones that drain your health, are a bit too much, but most of the other ones are a lot of fun! My personal favorite is the rabbit that makes your reload speed, movement speed and weapon swap speed go through the roof. The mutators are also good for different builds, you can customize the arena to how you like to play, which is honestly everything I could ever ask for.

The Hotdog arena is my favorite place to level up in UVHM, it’s random and the XP you get from all the BA enemies is amazing.

Soloing at 9 is horrifically tough and I love it. I still haven’t beaten 9 with my Athena so I’ve got goals to work towards which means I have a reason to keep playing.

Same! I’ve managed to beat round 8 with my Athena today and I’ve done 7 with Nisha but it’s gonna take a couple of tries with some decent spawn luck to beat round 9. If I see Shadowtrap, I’m just gonna reset

So I took Wilhelm to this arena last night, and I have to say, this concept is freaking brilliant. I’ll need to experiment with some of the other options (rocket arena?! OMG).

Half Gravity and Hyperspeed are my favorite game modes right now. Some of those seem like they’re just nerfs (Shoes Made of Acid or Vampires, for example). What’s the return for playing with these nerfs? I do see chests appear in the socket by the selection console when these come up, but you get a chest anyway? Better loot maybe?

Yeah, certain mutators give you better rarity chests but I’ve found legendaries in all three types of chests, so I dunno if certain ones increase the chance or not.

Its one of the greatest things ever created for a borderlands game. And theres just so many possibilities with all the different settings, its great. And really adds a nice endgame to the pre sequel. On top of fighting bosses, farming, etc…

It’s funny that this arena was just tacked on to the claptrap dlc like it was an afterthought, yet the holodome was garbage and it was considered a dlc by itself.

Greatest arena ever, in fact I’ll venture to say that the claptastic voyage is the best borderlands dlc ever. Initially I felt like Tiny Tina’s Assault was slightly better but on a second playthrough and completing the entire dlc I actually feel like claptastic voyage comes out on top. Glitched weapons, compelling and unique story, killer arena that offers endless possibilities of loot pushes this dlc above and beyond the others.

Quite frankly I was worried after vanilla tps was released, I felt like gearbox had run dry of ideas but this last dlc restored faith that they can still do some exceptional work. Hopefully BL4 will blow us out of the water.

What you see is what you get, so if you change the mutator and you see a silver chest, that’s what you’re gonna get if you finish the round. There’s 9 mutators (per socket), 5 red chests and 1 silver chest. The silver chests gives the best loot so that’s the mutator you would want to choose, this changes every time. If I get the silver chest with the vampire, I usually change it to a red chest mutator though, the vampire one is too ruthless. I basically see the silver chest mutator as the 1st option and the red chest mutators as an alternative. It’s a very good incentive to change the mutators every time you play the arena, which keeps it fresh.

Also another good thing about the mutator arena is that you can change your build to different mutators on the spot. I usually go 10/5 into Vanguard with my Athena but if I get the Glass Turtles mutator to land on a silver chest, I change Vanguard to 6/5 and put 5/5 into United Front, which works extremely well with the Shield of Ages. Glass Turtles gives +200% shield capacity so my Athena gets super beefy.

Love this arena cause it gave me absolute zero which otherwise is hard to get from EOS. This arena drops one time items too.

It would be perfect if there were a Respec station.

There is? To the right, behind the consoles, or am I crazy?

But it was mostly 2k that did the dlc.

There is a respec station, plus a bank to the right of it.

wait, what? a bank? never seen that. :see_no_evil:

Yeah, it’s that thing that looks like a yellow button that’s to the right of the skills station. It’s just like the one in the new shooting range.

I shouldn’t have reset UVHM at level 65. I should have kept doing the mutator Arena until I leveled up to 67 or 68. Then maybe reset UVHM.

I didn’t spot the bank!
