If Mayhem mode acts the same in both Normal and TVHM (scales enemy levels, increases loot % the same, etc), then the most efficient way to farm level 50 weapons would be to just do Normal mode Mayhem Level 3, correct? Saves another 20+ hours of story mode.
If the above is true, is there any practical point in playing through TVHM other than elemental resistances being more meaningful (read: “challenging”) as well as getting those handful of quest reward legendaries/uniques to drop at level 50?
The lazy among us could just wait until the level cap increases in a few months to run through it for those few quest items if we even want them at all…
I asked this on reddit last night but only got a couple of replies so I’ll try the official forums for more concrete feedback.
I’m also curious about this. Haven’t touched TVHM and won’t until I’m 50 but it would be neat to have good incentives such as TVHM only gear/missions/stuff as well as better loot rate. I assume loot rate and xp gain are already better in TVHM. I’m happy to have a harder mode regardless because I assume it will become needed to keep the gameplay from becoming too easy with some builds but I hope for more.
There’s a couple benefits. The loot multiplier for Mayhem Mode is increased in TVHM. There are stronger enemies to fight, for example there is an Annointed Tink that you have to fight before you rescue Vaughn. Annointed spawn before you get to the part where Troy gets his powers. Badasses and higher tier enemies spawn more frequently. Also, your mission rewards will be scaled to your level. Such as the Cloud Kill SMG. Wether you want to put the time in, it’s your choice. But if you start TVHM at level 50 you can pretty steamroll the game and ignore enemies to hit the objective points and speed through the game.
Let me explain the way I believe this works. If this is wrong then gearbox let me know.
If I run through NM and fight a boss let’s say he drops 3 items one purple and 2 greens.
I then play it on TVHM and fight the same boss. But this time it is 3 items. 1 legendary and a purple and a blue.
Now I go into the game on NM on Mayhem 1 and fight the same boss. This time he drops 15 items. One legendary and a couple purples and the rest blue and greens.
I go in the game again in TVHM with mayhem 1 and fight the same boss again. This time he drops the 15 items but 5 are legendary and the rest are purple and blues.
That is how I understand it to work. If you know other wise let me know.
i test play TVHM mayhem lvl 1 -+ 20 games hours mayhem lvl 2 same time and i see only harder bosses npc but ZERO better quality loots .i start lvl 2 and think now is all much harder i find better legendary with better quality and score but nothing.HARDER but without any profit .i start new main story without mayhem and only TVHM and see still same items nothing change.and best is WHEN in TVHM and mayhem lvl 2 kill boss in eden BIG ENT after 6 min drop only blue and green items total fail
It’s like switching your game Borderlands 1 game back to playthrough 1 before going to fight Crawmerax because he has less health and the fight is a bit easier but the loot pool is exactly the same.
Ya pretty much. Higher difficulty = higher loot drop rate. But after lots of playing and testign, its apparent that the weapons are not stronger in TVHM. So normal mode mayhem level 3 will be suitable for 90%+ of most players. Only the hardcore hunters will bother with noticeably harder enemies for just a small boost in loot drop rates.

This is how it’s always been. The harder difficulty only affects drop rate, not weapon stats. A Level 50 is still a level 50.
I am running TVHM M3 and the drops are actually worse. Though more greens are appearing in more random containers. Boss loot seems to be actually better on normal mode.
What I am thinking is that devs provide better loot on easier modes as assistance to complete the game - goes with Average Joe and Jane Gamer; while providing less loot on harder modes that, less loot meaning the game is actually is harder because your gear is of lesser quality.
Though a lot of greens are dropping out of random containers.
You’d think that the harder the game, the better the loot. And lets face it… gamers on harder modes only keep a few items while selling the rest. I could see less loot of BETTER quality or a rarer item.
So I just finished, I’m at lv. 41.
I should jump into mayhem 3 and finish up all my side missions?
Would rather finish up side jobs that starting over from 0 in tvhm
Not sure if I “lose” the sidequests when I start over in tvhm
There is no difference with enemy toughness, or any multipliers or modifiers/amounts. It’s rumored that you have better anointed rates, but I don’t find that to be true either.
I think I may see more anointed enemies in TVHM that’s about it. Besides that it’s just which elements have bonuses against which HP bars.
You really don’t need to go into mayhem or tvhm, just do some side missions or grind some slaughters or a boss like GW or maybe Billie’s… Lots of options, mayhem is not meant for leveling tbh. Maybe throw on mayhem 1 depending what strat you use, in order to level up zones to you.
The latest I did was my Zane and I leveled him the rest of the way with Slaughters. I enjoyed that way because they always level up with you, tons of exp, drops that kept scaling with me. And on top of that I really got to know how to play him.

I think @DocStrangelove determined that NMM functions exactly as TMM
Which I had been saying in my co-op session for weeks. Lol. That I was pretty certain that MM in normal was the same.
So. Like. The difference between Normal and True is enemy scaling. So. Activate MM in normal and the world scales to you. Then Mayhem is applied. Go to TVHM and you can get scaling sans MM. Or. You can just replay the game with MM or Scaling on.
For accuracy, the biggest difference between T and N MMs would be enemy health. So if I’m farming the same basic named enemy, there should be a difference in how long it takes me to kill them in between the modes if I get the same modifiers, if they are different. I found that to not FEEL to be the case.
Yeah so basically I noticed that my left over quests without Mayhem are varied in defficulty, depending on when I accepted it I guess ( 12, 21, 35 , 41 etc…) but when I applied mayhem they all went up to my current level (41).
I didn’t try MM 2 or 3 because I thought I needed MORE Mayhem runes to put in them ( silly me)
Anyway… my number one question is this:
basically if I start TVHM, I assume all those side quests I have twisting in the wind are gone and I start from the beginning, (right?)
BUT I WILL be able to go back to the main menu and select my NVHM game and continue side quests with Mayhem if I want?
Its basically a clean slate; any mission/items that you needed for that playthrough stay with it and can continue at anytime by selecting that mode
Though some things arent reset, such as hammerlocks hunts, zero’s bounty board
Dead claptrap, vehicles, moxxi radio towers, and eridian slabs can all be done again but are already unlocked
Ok thanks for some reason it seemed different with that confirmation screen when switching to tvhm that I would “lose” the nvhm and just got to the beginning again.
As long as I can have 2 modes going I’m happy.
I had thought the same thing when i got there; and having just lost all my fast travel locations i just jumped in to that figuring what else could i lose…haha
