Am I reading this right(sustainment)?

I was going through Amara’s skill tree on borderlands.com, and I noticed a skill called sustainment. It says when maxed out, she gains 20% life steal with elemental weapons. Am I reading that right? Does that really mean she gets 1/5th of her damage added back to her health?

Yes but it’s conditioned to elemental weapons only. Compared to Borderlands 2, it does seem strong but this time around health vs damage scaling seems a bit more tame. So maybe it isn’t as OP as it initially reads.

Its OP…let’s not forget the skill in the previous tier Indiscriminate. So youre basically getting life steal from multiple enemies from ricocheting bullets.

But wait theres more…

Its not restricted to elemental weapons…its elemental damage dealt with weapons. So it also works with a high damage high crit Jacob’s weapon that can get even more damage with Infusion, Tempest, Forceful expression, and Personal Space.

It is indeed very good but there won’t be any slag or OP levels (at least at launch) to make life steal as good as it was in BL2 (Frigid Touch from TPS might be a better point of reference even though it only gave 10%)

It is ONLY the elemental damage. It isn’t ALL damage from any gun with an element. Still good, don’t get me wrong. Especially good when paired with Infusion and the capstone.

I may be wrong but I think Amara could end up being the most powerful character for all content as at level 50 she should have tools to fight both bosses and multiple mobs.

The down side I think is that she develops a lot slower then the other vault hunters.

I wouldnt say the most powerful (Fl4k)…I would say the most versatile and straight forward.

Fl4k doesn’t really have much in the way of sustain or fighting groups. I think they will be the worst in circle of slaughter for instance. What I meant by all content is she does not have any glowing weakness.

Best defense is a great offense. I just said most powerful.

Amara: Most Well Rounded
Zane: Most Potential
Moze: Most Bullets being fired.

It really depends how important ammo is going to be vs hordes. Fl4k’s best action skill would be Rakk Attack rather then Fade Away and even that won’t be all that good.

I think the best vs waves will be (best to worst):

Moze: Can build so she never has to stop firing all the time getting stronger
Amara: Can go melee or have good aoe thus saving bullets
Zane: Clone (a reliable tank) and SNTNL can kill while he runs about looking for ammo
Fl4k: Kinda screwed, hoping pet will tank while he runs about

Amara certainly seems to do proving grounds faster then Fl4k with either brawl or fist of elements build while Moze excels with bottomless mags. I can only guess but I think circle of slaughter will be even more hectic and harder on ammo.

Considering the elemental damage of a gun with sustainment - how does it work exactly?

I mean how much for example actual fire damage does a fire elemental gun with let’s say 100 damage?
Is the percentage different for each gun?
Also, if the percent of actual elemental damage is high, is infusion even worth? Or should we just use an elementless weapon to begin with and use infusion for best results?

Also considering Infusion - wouldn’t using Infusion reduce our total dps by quite a bit when we fight an enemy with resist to our action skill element regardless of the weapon we are using? I mean, it is converted to that element whatever we do, unless we change the action skill element each time we see a resistant enemy.

Or did no one test these things yet, and we have to wait until release to actually know this stuff?

I think the only time you may need to spec sustainment is vs raid bosses and if you do you can pick which element you use.

I cannot claim to know how much it’ll return in health but you can have 40-80% of your damage as elemental, plus 18-54% bonus elemental damage (if cap stones can reach 3) and 20-40% of that as life steal.

Bit far into theorycrafting for my liking but it could be that it becomes very powerful.

Sorry but I’d rather have 8 seconds of autocrits, health regen, and movement speed rather than pet damage. Based on the videos the Proving Grounds is a cake walk…and that’s without dedicated builds.

Fl4k will be fine.

When it comes to waves. I’d rather have multiple attacks that one shoot mobs on low cooldown that also keeps anointed buffs up 100% of the time then overkilling for 8 seconds once a minute.

Fl4k will be more then fine but isn’t the best at everything and could arguably be the worst at some parts of the game.

Also proving grounds seem a cake walk at level 30-50 on normal mode with tailored legendaries…

As long as we are on the same page as everything is personal opinion…for me Id rather build around the toughest enemies instead of trash mobs.
