Underwhelming gears. Help me write a to-do list, won't you?

What it says up top, folks. I’m on a mission to try as many underwhelming/maligned/hard to use items as possible (thinking about weapons, nades, and shields, but if you think something else meets the criteria I’ll try it). Can you guys help me write a list? Maybe include which character you think can get the most out of them. Sources are optional.

Stinkpot
Unforgiven
The Bane
Retcher
Logan’s gun
Landscaper
Chulain
Bearcat
The cradle
Legendary pointman com
Midnight star
Commerce
Bandit Etech
X-Communicate Blasster (I’ll try the mission again rather than take it elsewhere on Pandora. Maybe.)
Evil Smasher
Bunny

I could go full on mean and write down the Stinkpot, but that one is a very rare case of something no one can salvage at all.
What about the Unforgiven? If you have one that is. I really like that revolver personally, but I rarely see people actually make use of it proper.

The Bane.
That weapon Marcus gives you for acquiring that one refund he gave in error.

It’s not mean if I asked for it, is it? To be honest it’s on my list of things to try anyway, and I’ve got a few characters in a position to dashboard for one, so it goes on the list.

I’ve had a couple at lower levels, and liked them as well. But I’ll put it on the list in case I get another one.

That is mean. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
I’ve said before that the movement penalty is what gets this bad boy vendored as soon as it’s in my inventory, but with positioning I suppose I could use it like a sniper. It goes on the list.

Seems to be we had a thread like this a while back on “worst weapons” which ended up as more of a challenge list. Maybe search that one up?

There’s something to try with Axton

I will. Absolutely will. But if it’s okay I’ll keep this thread open to manage my to-do list and take suggestions.

On your list are a bunch of things I wouldn’t mind taking for another spin, donuts (so it’s) (I’m leaving the misspelling because every thread needs 1000% more donuts.) all going on the list. I use the Landscaper regularly, so I think that might be done already, but I’ll add it to the list anyway. The Chulainn worked pretty well for me in earlier playthroughs, but it was close to a death sentence in UVHM.

For me, the Cradle is one that I can’t get to work (without reconstructive surgery). I mean, the shield is just a standard Tediore thing (crappy stats… not even the low cap with high recharge), but that reload pellet… kind of doesn’t work?

Also, the Retcher and Commerce need some lovin’ for regular use.

When you pick one and start using it, let me know… some of them like the Midnight Star have a pretty narrow niche where they work (and when it does, it’s pretty fun).

How did you use the Landscaper?

I forgot about that, it certainly fits the underwhelming description.

I have a couple of these floating around actually. I got it to work for me a couple of times, but I couldn’t really make it regular and repeatable. I’ll give it another go for sure.

I think I got my ideas for usage from you, actually. :+1:
I’ve used it with a singularity in the middle, and I’ve aggroed rushers and then laid down a little rug for them to stumble on. I’ve also put out the welcome mat with it in short notice to stagger Ironclad Lunatics to buy me time to get my corrosive on.

The Stinkpot was on it iirc. You should definitely take that for a spin.

As soon as I get one I’m taking it out for a spin. When I get back to Pandora I’m going to get to work on this list. The bad guns will get all of the chances.

The grenades are timed (as in, they won’t last forever). If you’re next to a big cliff, give them a toss as far as you can, and see where they are upon their return. With enough flight time, you can get them to detonate in front of you in a wall safely, kind of like the Flakker. I use this to pop Rakk, but it did take a while to get the timing down, since the flight time is so long (but conveniently, Rakk take a long route when aiming for you).

Once you have the timing down, you can throw them off a cliff, count in your head how long it will take to hit the ground (which is the point at which the grenade will do the calculation for the return trajectory), and make sure you’re standing where you want the grenades to land a few seconds later. You need enemies that will be reliably parked for a while (somewhere where they’re taking cover, slow moving, whatever), and you need to be comfortable running around outside of cover (not ideal in UVHM at times). For example: HOT Loaders next to a cliff, booster shield can shrug off the fire DoT, and they move slow. I mean, I could always shoot them with the Ogre and be done with it in a few seconds, but I find this way more entertaining.

Singularity grenades are so great - here’s Maya on an all-Landscaper run through Southern Shelf Bay

A rug for rushers (I love how the guy knocked out of the last bike still manages to land on a grenade)

For more fun: catapult!

I’ll put it on the list, but I’ve done X-Communicate 3 or 6 times in UVHM, so I think I’ve given it all the chances it deserves. I could put Bandit etech up as a category, because any time I’ve used them I was definitely underwhelmed, but I’ll give 'em another chance in the name of masochism.

The special thing with the mission gun is that (at least in True and Normal) it’s non-elemental whereas any etech you find randomly will be elemental. So it sux pux extra hard.

We are so repeating ourselves now.
Oh well. IIRC anytime it spawned elemental it still bit the big one. I’m willing to give the other etechs a shot, and maybe even try that mission again (I think I skipped it with Salvester in UVHM. Maybe I should try it at OP8?)

Tried it once.

Once.

This is poetry. I can hear tears in the pregnant pause between your clauses.

But yes. I suspect it would be miserable. It was already miserable in the early 50s on level. I’m sure it’s 8 times worse at OP8. I guess we’ll have to measure how masochistic I’m feeling by the level I try that at.

The nurse at Bellevue filling out my intake paperwork: On a scale of 72 to OP8, how much do you hate yourself today?

I am on the plus side of the Stinkpot on occasion , it certainly has done well for me in Washburn in N/TVHM with Maya. Spam a ton of Stinkpot grenades coupled with CloudKill and lots of loaders melt.
Never tried it in UVHM cuz I’m not, uh, dumb.
