Does anyone know how difficult the game might be? I hope for a difficulty like ultimate vault hunter mode in BL2 or even harder and I would hate to see it’s most difficult setting be too easy like it was for the presequal.
I have a feeling the game will be the same as previously, start out in normal mode, and then work your way up with repeating the story line. It is not a bad mechanic, just not one I personally liked.
UVHM is the reason I don’t play BL2 even though it has more content than TPS. Something like the cortex arena’s difficulty slider would be better, allowing finer tuning to personal preferences, with the ridiculous settings actually significantly improving drop rates.
It’s also difficult to have an opinion on this without having proper knowledge of gun and skill balance. The reason I have such deep hatred for BL2’s UVHM is that entire playstyles and skill types that work perfectly fine in TVHM are suddenly no longer viable at all (damage reduction, for instance), with only a few builds being good.
The same difficulty would be much more bearable if I had many ways to tackle it.
I imagine the difficulty to actually be different then Borderlands 2. There is more ability or technical play, also wall climb and slides. We’re also going to have our own loot which will make a big difference when in parties. Having abilities and sub talents for them kind of requires the game to change its pace or more then being a gun game, imo.
In BL2 it was simply speed (run and gun), power. It wasn’t that fun, at least leveling through the higher difficulties (thanks to that crap scaling). Watching the BL3 gameplay it looked more at the pace of Borderlands then BL2. IMO which is great.
BL3 can set up a better pace for the game. It can be more of a action shooter with the changes then just a shooter. I don’t think it will be easier or harder, just depending on the player. Hopefully it wont simply be about speed and power, but of awareness, reflex (not shooting), and proper execution of abilities.
From watching the gameplay reveal it looked easier than borderlands 2. It looks like borderlands 1 in terms of damage taken, no one getting health gated and shields absorbing quite a few hits before breaking. I hope they opt for difficulty settings vs harder playthroughs, I get really bored with games that dont provide a challenge early on.
Then again. Maybe they were nerfed the difficulty for this reveal because they didnt want players dying in the demo?
You can determine the difficulty by what gear you use. Borderlands doesn’t need difficulty settings.
With all of the different characters and builds, i’ve never had a problem of playing the style i wanted. Whether it be run and gun or tactical.
Based on the gameplay, probably like the previous ones. Multiple enemies require multiple strategies. And not that the guns have 2 modes things will be interesting
That didn’t stop Goth from blowing himself up during the stream
Bear in mind the streamers were started off with what appeared to be some fairly good gear for their level and having good gear makes the game easier. If your luck is crap the game will be harder. So if all your boxes are full of white junk items blame schrodinger and his damn cat.
The lack of Slag makes the scaling better by default.
Either that or the game is going to be as busted as the Epic Storefront.
Will Borderlands 3 Suffer From The Old Leveling/Pacing Issues If You Quest A Lot?
In every Borderlands title thus far, it has frustrated me that, except in PT 2.5 / UVHM, if you spend basically any time at all doing side quests / gear farming / grinding, you will become drastically overleveled to the point where most main / side quests become a joke.
Do you guys think they will find a way around this for 3?
Is there even a realistic way around it?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Going to be awesome to be in on a Borderlands title from the Day 1 ground floor again!
We don’t know yet if they use the old system with multiple playthroughs again, but I would assume so. Apart from that I have some interesting observations that might indicate a different approach to difficulty than in the previous games:
- The scaling seems to be more flat: We have seen and calculated a scaling of 9% per level for player health and I would assume that Gearbox has used a similar scaling on everything else in the game.
- More focus on elements and DoTs: DoTs seem to be far stronger than in the 2 previous games and the focus on matching elements seems to be even higher.
- Seemingly higher damage reduction when hitting with a resisted element: Goes with the previous point, but the penalty for resisted elements seemed far higher as enemies can now be completely immune to damage types.
- More focus on crit spots: Some of the more dangerous, but regular enemies we’ve seen so far seemed to resist damage just all-around, but got absolutely destroyed when hit in the right spot; that way Gearbox can make TVHM/UVHM more difficult without just increasing HP/shield/damage values. It’s the basic “Play smart, not hard” idea.
- The same goes for the freshly integrated physics-based combat systems like electrocuting water, setting oil aflame, damaging enemies with exploding radiated “colleagues” or hitting/sliding into barrels. The game wants us to stay vigilant and use the surroundings to our advantage.
My conclusion is that Gearbox clearly wants us to become better in time and with each playthrough and I think that is a better approach to difficulty overall, although not perfect. To really test us it would need a major step up in the A.I. department. But it’s not like we have seen anything regarding the endgame yet. Maybe the enemies become progressively smarter with each difficulty, who knows?
I think the 3 modes followed by the OP levels is a mechanic that keeps the game going and they shouldn’t tamper with that mechanic itself. However I think increased legendary drop rates throughout the increasing difficulties would be a nice touch. As well as offering new rewards for quests. Maybe even a system where if you complete a mission on normal mode you would get a random Unkempt Harold (just for reference) but if you do that same mission in the UVHM mode you could acquire and Unkempt but this time with perfect parts. Or something along those lines
I personally liked the fact that in the early game difficulty, if you wanted to you could do enough side missions to help you move on, and enjoy the rest of the game by somewhat over leveling.
Once I got to Ultimate vault then that was not there, and by then you should know the game well enough to push through.
I fear that I would have dropped the game early, and never played again had the difficulty been far to extreme in the early learning story learning difficulties stages.
But that is just me I am sure. Only my opinion, but It did give poor players like my self a way to push through the story, by working extra hard at side quest to give me a better chance at beating that beat me silly boss.
I just hope they don’t put Die for sure jumps in like they did in Pre
UVHM is pretty easy for me, but OP levels got out of hand
I think that BL3’s “base”-TVHM and UVHM will be relatively easy compared to BL2 and that the Mayhem mode compensates for this by giving us control over the difficulty of the game after we finished the story. Let’s just hope that we get rewarded for increasing the difficulty further and that the aspects “Mayhem Mode” can alter are actually meaningful and more than just increased numbers.
Addendum: I also want the “Mayhem Mode” to be able to reduce the difficulty compared to the normal difficulty of the playthrough, so more people can enjoy the game on all levels of play. On top of that there could be an option for online co-op to only look for people that are close to your difficulty level.
Borderlands 3 has new intersting mechanics but my main problem is same as borderlands 1 and borderlands 2 + pre sequel. The difficulty. There should be a tuneable difficulty as player’s will or two different difficulties. Normal and Hard because sure that a lot of people arent tryhard and just wanna chill and shoot. But some people love their game when they are more challenging. I am the second type but I truly want the first type enjoying the game too that’s for sure. Hapily the AI seems really more intelligent than before which is funnier. I have to say that this game is absolutely breathtaking but my only concern is really the difficulty.
Moved you to the right section and existing thread. Welcome to the forums!
Pretty much what I would like as well. For me it’s a basic idea of inclusivity towards different types of players/people. I love the difficulty of Borderlands 2, but I feel good at OP0 and don’t feel the need to go further. On the other hand I know multiple people that quit Borderlands 2 over the difficulty of UVHM and I understand that.
The more adjustable the difficulty of Borderlands 3 is the more people will keep playing it and stay with the franchise.
I am hoping for uvhm difficulty. That is what kept me playing 2 for years and still playing. I dont play 1 or tps because there is no challenge, i wouldnt mind it as an option for those not wanting it.
