Those 40moonstone chests are such a scam

Tiny chance you will get something good and you will badly need the extra ammo the moonstones could have bought you later on in the game

I don’t mind them too much. I usually get purples from them that are definitely worth using. And besides Moonstone drops faster than Eridium anyway so it’s not too big a loss.

I never touch them until I’ve got my ammo slots maxed. Which is to say, virtually never. It does mean there’s something you can do with moonstones beside buying SDUs, although I’d rather throw them in the grinder with stuff TBH.

Edit: And thanks to @Kurtdawg13 liking this post several months later, I can now spot and edit all my typos!

Leveling up they are great. I usually get a good blue or purple upgrade. Sometimes with a cool luneshine effect.

Best bet is to wait to use them until you are overleveled enough to quiclky farm Iwagira & the Sentinel for Moonstones in Normal Mode.

You’ll come across them after boss fights as you go, but that’s the dirty trick part, since the expectation is to be rewarded with loot for the kill like the previous games. Basically those chests are the continuation of Tiny Tina’s dice roll chests from Assault on Dragon Keep.

So yeah, SDUs as you go, and farm those chests after you hit level 33 or so, unless you have an overpowered build early.

I got beat by Glitch Thresher boss (worst boss in the game for me) because of them (i.e. ran out of ammo)
because I opened one once

just once meant that I was unable to get two 20moonstone ammo upgrades which would have helped me massively on this boss

so yeh to me they are a complete scam

That’s fine if thats how you feel. But its so easy to stock up on moonstones in tps.

I like them a lot actually. I have plenty of max ammo on most of my characters, and “dungeons” with a boss and guaranteed purples at the end, in exchange for currency received for just playing the game however, is great.

Although I’ve cheesed the system occasionally by going into normal mode and killing Iwajira repeatedly for moonstones.

IMO, the gear potential is not worth the price to open. I hope that they don’t appear in BL3.

I’d vote for something closer to the Tiny Tina D20 chests combined with grinder function. Maybe something like an improved chance for better loot, combined with whatever added feature is going to be in the game (like luneshine or glitch weapons.) I think the flat cost (which seems a little on the high side early-game when you’re trying to buy SDUs) is the major deterrent for me.

On some characters I’m totally maxed out on ammo, backback, & moonstones (max 500 one can carry). So I’ll pop the boxes just to have something to use’em on. I’ve found a few nice things! Or, leave them for teammates to pick up.

I categorize the Moonstone chests like Butt Stallion on BL2.
