How does the damage bonus work on the Maliwan Lasers and The Machine work?

It really interests me if the damage bonus on Maliwan lasers and The Machine is determined by the time spent firing the gun or the amount of rounds fired. Basically I’m asking if Athena can make them broken to the infinity and beyond?

The wiki says how long the trigger is held down, but also notes that both damage and fire rate are increased with this. Easy enough to test in the Deck 13.5 firing range though.
