Lol for the first time ever in TVHM I couldn't kill Mortar so I skipped him

Just couldn’t do it

Oh well I doubt he would have dropped anything good anyway

IIRC he drops the Pandemic? What level were you and him? Just did that myself, but phaselock makes Mortar easy-peasy.

The first few times I played he’d always surprise and kick my butt. Now I usually just unleash hell before the elevator swings open, particularly with tesla grenades.

During my early time in Borderlands 2, Can’t remember which character am using at that time and which difficulty mode (maybe in normal), I think I am below the recommended level at that time, I was stuck at the respawn point near the elevator in Mortar area. I can’t Kill the 4 Ambush Commanders.

4 of them are already outside the elevator, and after I respawn and take a peak at them, bullets came flying by and next thing I know I am in FFYL and can’t even dent their healthbar due to the shields they are carrying.

I think I quit at that time and do some side mission first and find an on level gears before trying to kill them again.

Had that happen to me. And got trolled by Hyperion Voice Lady informing me that all spawn-campers would be banished from this plane of existence. I eventually got out of there, but it was pretty brutal and left me completely broke.

Haha the same almost happened to me but luckily I had already killed 2 of them

the other 2 and a bunch of goons killed me a few times by the respawn point but I managed to get out eventually whilst gunzerking and killing a little goon for 2nd wind. At far away distance I was able to use vladoff flame grenades, slag gun and then rocket launcher to clear out everyone else.

Same could not be said for Mortar however! (I was like 1 or 2 level under recommended I think, can’t remember) Even using rocket launcher I couldn’t really come close to killing him so yeah I just skipped him.

Again, seemingly a point in the game where Sal comes out below the other VHs, I took him out easily with Maya (as someone said before, very easy), Axton and Zero.

Same happened with me as I was playing with Axton my first go around and hadn’t really optimized my skills or taken to playing very cautiously.

Actually getting to know the layout of that map helps a lot, and being patient and clearing the open area first and using it as a place to put some distance between your and the horde of bandits so the waves are segmented. I started hanging closer to the chute from the Boombringer Buzzard Camp area. It gives you room to take your targets out from afar and let your skills cool down, or better yet, snipe. Mortar’s grenades are what gets you if you take him on right there by the elevator. If you put a good amount of distance between yourself and him and have a decent grenade and range weapons of some sort, you can handle him.

All you’re missing in not killing him is XP, badass points, and gratification.

One thing that’s a little different between all the games is the amount of side missions you need to do as you progress to stay on level sans doing DLC stuff. To be on level for Sawtooth without farming XP somewhere I found that I basically need to do almost every untimed side mission up to that point (mainly cause I had those missions: Neither Rain Nor Sleet Nor Skags? in Three Horns Valley, Doctor Zed’s Body Part Mission in the Highlands, and Marcus’s Refund Mission in Eridium Blight). The latter two are fine so long as you make sure to locate all the drop off points and plan your route, but Neither Rain is an SOB if you are underleveled.

Sal is very gear-dependent, so what you are describing is very real, especially at low-level UVHM (between 50 and 60)

As for Mortar, just skip him
The pandemic is good…but not great, and it will be underleveled very fast in UVHM anyway… IF it drops at all.
