Questions Before First Peak Run

Hello again wonderful people of the forum! Following the advice offered in my last topic combined with copious amounts of face tanking, I have completed the main story on UVHM and have reached level 72. Given a desire for shinier toys and more challenge, the next step is to shoot for OP levels. It is here I am hoping for some clarification as it seems like different parts of the internet have contradictory opinions and answers to the following;

1.)Are OP levels effectively just an extension of UVHM? This is in the sense in that in order to keep gaining OP levels I just have to keep beating the peak rather than recomplete the entire story yet again like I had to to move from Normal to TVHM to UVHM?

2.)How much quicker do weapons become obsolete? I know barring a few super star weapons UVHM was toss every third level roughly at least for my skill.

3.)Does the game use the same rules for determining the level of quest rewards or can it be randomized across OP levels? Example: I complete the Rakaholics Mission for OP 2 and turn the quest in to Moxxi. If I accepted the quest at OP 2, am I guaranteed an OP 2 Rubi or could I get an OP 1 instead?

3B.) Assuming I wanted to be a cheeky cheeseball, could a quest be accepted at an OP level, but then I drop to UVHM/OP 0 for an easier run but still get a reward geared for OP levels because that was the level I accepted the mission at?

4.)Finally the reset question: I understand I keep my BA rank, OP levels, and gear as well as that the Main Story and DLCs reset to their opening acts, but what about challenges? Are they all reset to 1, or does it depend on whether max level was completed?

Thank you for input and for tolerating this wall of text.

1.) Yes. Once you get to level 72, run the Peak. When that is completed, Tannis will announce how proud she is of you in the most deprecating manner possible. In order to increase to OP1, quit the game and reload and you’ll see a screen that asks you what level you’d like to play at. Toggle from OP0 to OP1. Repeat the Peak runs for further levels. The story- and side-quests remain otherwise unaffected.

2.) I usually get new gear at OP3, OP5 and OP7 ; OP7 => OP8 can be rather difficult, so I recommend putting the effort into retooling then. Depends on the gear though : A Hornet is invaluable there and is the easiest farm in the game, so you could get one every level if so inclined. Harold and Slagga too. The loot train in Marcus’ DLC is a great way to get better shields and grenades.

3.) Mission items are granted on the same level the quest was taken on.
3B.) Can’t remember.

4.) No. If you mean BA rank challenges, you have to prestige ( which is another thing altogether ).

Also I highly recommend HD’s Peak guide and check my link regarding elements.

You can rerun the peak as many times in a row as you’d like, though you do have to exit and rejoin at each higher level to keep climbing, no redoing uvhm each time.

Same rules. anywhere within 2 levels of where you are, that’s the weapon drops you’ll see.

I think they’re reset, but idk. i’ve only reset uvhm once. worst decision ever. Do not recommend.

Just my five cents:

  1. A lot of people people grab a bee delivery gun at lvl 72 and then just update the bee every level or two without refreshing guns. This works some of the way but keeping a Harold close to level is also advisable for any FFYL moments. Find the one or two items that you find essential to your success and refresh them every 2-3 levels, ignore the rest of your gear and just push on otherwise you can easily become burnt out on farming.

  2. B) To the best of my knowledge the quest reward item will be equal to the lowest level that you either accept or complete the quest at. What level you do everything in between at is irrelevant.

2.) Depends on character and build. Deputy Sal does fine with a level 72 ROM, no need to replace it until OP8. As I recall I was on a variant of the Jefe schedule with Maya, starting to shift away from her level 72 Pimpernel at OP4. The Bitch is an easy farm for her so I kept that up to date, and got bogged down looking for a usable Maggie. She’ll start looking for a Lyuda at OP5, whenever I get back to her.

Where we’re all of the same opinions here. I think we’re just more civilized about it though.

I think your questions have largely been answered, but this is a tricky one:

It absolutely depends on the weapon, your build/loadout, and how you use it. There’s no real answer to this, though if you pick a specific piece of gear, we’ll provide a unified opinion about it. (While I’m sort of kidding, for getting past the last several OP levels, few are the players who can do this without the best, on-level gear the game has to offer).

Which class are you running through first?

We get the question of “how often should we replace underleveled guns for Digistruct (OP) runs?” a lot.

My answer is that I think you can get through to OP5 with L72 weapons, but if you are really struggling then replace at whatever level you don’t feel you are doing any damage at.

I would then re-farm a few specific, easy to get, top tier weapons at OP6 to carry me through to OP8. Let me know if you’d like more details there, I’ll try to cut & paste from an old post on top tier gear that’s easy to farm quickly (though you’ll have to reset your campaign likely).

What they said for the most part but I’ll add this: get a The Transformer shield for dealing with surveyors. it is a literal life saver…

They do not reset with the OP levels.

if you are talking about the B.A.R. Rank Challenges then no, these are not reset if you restart UVHM, they can however be reset by pressing “Y” (I believe) on the BAR Stat page menu, after a certain percent of the challenges are met.

Also of note, once you complete the OP 7 Round you are Now OP 8 and do not need to complete Round 8 unless you just want to

I’m running Axton on an explosive build. Sorry I should have mentioned that in the original post.

So looking at the wiki it seems to suggest Pimon is the best source for the transformer shield, however I almost never see him when I run through the preserve. Is he a conditional mini boss?

They are a random spawn, but appear maybe 30-50% of the time. The best way is to enter the Creature Slaughter area, re-enter the WEP and every time you quit/save/restart, you’ll be right there where Pimon and Tumbaa spawn.

So it is random. Thank you for clarifying.

I am interested in learning more details about this top gear. If I need to reset the campaign so be it (though I may wait a few levels first.)

It would be nice to not be unkempt herald dependent although it is easy to farm and has a well earned reputation.

I’ve never been an Axton player, but he DOES like explosive and grenades, so really you can’t go wrong with an explosive fastball. if you can aim.

This is a very useful thread. Grenade damage boosts splash damage and it’s good to know which guns you can crank up with Axton’s grenade boosts. For example, the Hail is extra awesome with Axton.

Piemanlee also has an excellent top gear thread in the Axton section
