Tips for Teaching someone New?

Ok, so recently started playing the game with someone who has never played the series before. While its easy to give advice on basic gameplay mechanics, loot etc, I worry I’ve played the game through sooooo many times that I may overlook simple, basic things. I dont want him to miss out on any of the things I fell in love with about the game.

Advice anyone?

My top two:

  • Don’t fire your rocket launcher while standing behind a wall. Simple, but I don’t know how many times I’ve done that and then realised, “Riiiight, this isn’t BL2 and I can’t move in FFYL”.

  • Don’t rely on the stats and arrows: always test fire everything before deciding what to keep

The only other thing I’d throw out is the link pinned at the top of the category for the ideal play-through sequence.

When it comes down to when you’re about to get downed, consider if it’s worth it to huddle behind some cover and hope you don’t get nicked, or to jump out and close that distance in anticipation of taking a knee.

It sucks to get downed behind cover where you can’t shoot back, but becoming a short-term turret in the middle of a group of baddies isn’t so bad.

I wish I could reset my brain so I could play borderlands again for the first time!

I know what you mean though. Once you’ve sunk a few hundred hours into it across a few characters , its easy to just concentrate on the stuff that progresses you faster but forget about the other stuff.

There are some great missions in BL1 that dont necessarily give good loot but are still fun to do.

Plus all the sneaky areas and hidden chests , little midget wrestlers hiding in lockers , red text gear camouflaged as a white.

Damn it , now I want to go play it again!

  • In early game, when ammo capacity is low, it is better to have several different types weapon archetypes in your inventory, just not to search for ammo in the middle of fight. I used 4 weapons in rotation, then 1st depletes, I use 2nd, then 3rd and when I come back to 1st - it has full ammo collected from pickups.
  • Don’t forget to check out secret missions;
  • Grenade jumping is fun;
  • Corrosive is slag of BL1;
  • Transfusion grenades have a lot of utility;
  • Do not overlevel for final “Vanilla” boss;
  • CQC doesn’t require ADS;
  • Do not push too much when engaged in a fight - 1v1 trading is better than 1v5;
  • If you do not do enough damage, run and shoot DOT;
  • Always test red text weaponry;

  • Watch those little red dots.
  • Check every Med and Weapon machine, Thars Gold
  • Get out of the vehicle around heavy fights, it blows you will die.
