I just learnt that basic Maliwan pistols are boosted by Axton's Steady skill

does anyone know about this? Does it give a good boost to Maliwan pistol damage?

Check this link, and note the list of weapons the benefit from grenade-type damage. Axton has some skills that buff grenade damage, that will also affect these weapons.

This is an example of one. Finding and taking advantage of others can really transform the game, and can be fun in and of itself.

Any gun that gets grenade splash damage added to it will be boosted by Steady (and any other skill that boosts grenade damage). It can be very useful on weapons like Maliwan Plasma Casters or Torgue weaponry.

yes I know that post, that is where I learnt that Maliwan pistols got grenade damage bonus

that post states: Maliwan pistols 80% - what does that mean? 80% of the damage will be boosted by the Grenade bonus?

Please note, I generally donā€™t like using Torgue weaponry

Maliwan pistolsā€™ splash damage will be 80% of the damage listed on the item card, in addition to the damage done by the main projectile.

so I tried it out last night

I had a white Maliwan slag pistol and it did 2800 damage on the dummy in Marcusā€™ shop (no com)

I added a com that gave +4 Steady skill (i.e. +20% grenade damage) and the pistol did 3000 damage

a pretty small amount really, much less than 20%, in-fact closer to 10%
so using Maliwan pistols (which I very much like to do, much more so than Torgue) you can effectively half the grenade bonus damage you get for added damage

Steady is only boosting the splash ( that 80% ), not the bullet and splash.

Were you in UVHM, and furthermore OP8? there are damage penalties in UVHM that will obscure your numbers in the dummy range. I canā€™t remember what the modifier is, but I know you wonā€™t get the damage you see on the card if in UVHM and even worse if OP8.

I hate taking info from the Wiki, cause I donā€™t believe its reliable, but here is what i found:

Vault Hunters are still considered at level 72, therefore will deal lower damage and take more damage when fighting high level enemies, due to the leveling damage reduction (55% roughly at OP8). Elemental effects inflicted by Vault Hunters will also last shorter amounts of time.

I can confirm Maliwan Pistol build for Axton is legit, and sick build to run

I found an awesome mod that gave me +30% grenade damage aswell as Impact+6 and Steady+5
in other words it gave me an extra 24% gun damage and additional 55% grenade damage

so using the data I researched before, in other words it would boost Maliwan Pistol damage by about an extra 50%!
I also have a pistol damage +24% relic which I can use if I want to!
Yup, bandits started going down with this build in UVHM almost as easily as they did in TVHM.

This now means that to me Maliwan Pistols are basically the best weapons in the game for Axton, Salvador and Zero also.
In other words all original vault hunters (except for Maya who is better off using SMGs) are best with Mali pistols.

Theyā€™re the best weapons in the game, overall.

They are pretty good with Axton indeed. They get grenade damage boost and can match elements unlike Torgue.
Try to look for an Umbrage, the one with Vladof barrel. This thing is amazing!

This post made me rethink Maliwan pistols in their entiretyā€¦ Your odds of getting a really good purple one is rough but their damage is pretty extraordinary. Only drawback is how quickly you melt through your pistol ammo, a Maliwan relic with damage can go up to 39%, it might be far more beneficial to loadout with a Hellfire and Storm to divide your ammo consumption and save the corrosive slot for the pistol. Magic Missile can be your nade mod and a Norfleet for emergency pickup situations.
