Shotgun Open Wide challenge

So I’m wondering… I’m trying for the Challenge Accepted achievement but have an undiscovered Shotgun challenge which I found out unlocks after completing Open Wide lvl 5. The thing is, I’m playing Hellborn Krieg and deal a lot more dmg with fire. So my question is, if I use a fire shotgun, I assume my point-blank kill won’t count if it’s the fire dmg that kills an enemy?

I don’t think it does unfortunately! Easiest thing to do (and what I did) was to grab a Jakobs shotty and go back to NVHM and just run around killing everything! Takes ages and gets a bit dull but gets the job done!

Yeah I’ve seen posts and vids of people doing that. I just figured I might want to try it legit since I find going back to nvhm kinda cheating, and it’s more rewarding to work for it

I’m not familiar with Krieg but as long as the (killing) damage come from the shotgun it should count. Even if it’s buffed by something else or an element. Best thing is probably to look at you count. Try it on a bunch of ennemies and look look back at your count. You should have your answer right there.

The trouble with that though is during a Hellborn rampage (guns or buzzaxe) you have potential elemental damage from your weapon, probably FotF and Raving Retribution all firing at once so it’s hard to account for the killing blow!

Yeah that’s the thing. I’ll get it eventually though, after enough time. And I suppose there might be another character that plays better with shotguns than Krieg. Any suggestions for a good Shotgun tho? Striker seems to do little dmg if it’s not critical. Jolly Roger is working well but that’s fire so…

I’d go with a big purple Jakobs. It’ll probably chew through ammo though and you don’t get many shotgun buffs that are easy to sustain

Hmm, but the striker is Jacobs tho, and legendary, so I’d kinda reckon it’d be more efficient in most cases… But Jacobs specialise in Crit dmg or general dmg? I was thinking of for example Sledges Shotgun in comparison

True but it really depends on your build. Watch Pain is Power as the numbers only work in favour of Crits if you max it out.

The Striker is the sniper rifle wannabe shotgun in the Jakobs line that is geared for medium range brain-busting. It is also one of, if THE, most efficient shotguns in the game when used properly (aiming for the critical hit location) at the appropriate range.

Other Jakobs shotguns do well with body shots with Coach Guns being overall the best due to their accuracy, reload speed, ammunition consumption, and decent damage. You don’t have to aim for the critical hit location to kill enemies with a Jakobs shotgun but it does help and especially so if you are close enough for most if not all of the pellets to hit.

The two most powerful non-elemental Jakobs shotguns are the Orphan Maker with the Rustler’s prefix and the Hydra. Both shotguns are capable of doing brutally high damage but both have their trade offs: Orphan Maker damages the user every time it is fired and the Hydra is pretty much useless beyond point blank range.

Fire DOT does not count for the shotgun kill. If you want the achievement you could pick up a nonelemental shotty (or just respec) and drop to lower difficulty. Got to Caustic caverns and / or Tundra express and take on the Varkids. They come to you in large packs so it’s easy to farm up the challenge.

Low level Dwarven Mines, during the Wand quest. Stand in front of the door the orc comes out. 2 quick button presses, Insert wand, shoot shotty. Repeat forever.

Whenever I want to do BAR farming I go over to the Badass Crater of Badassitude and do the Bar Room Brawl in normal or TVHM, either or works.

Doubles as token farming.

Okay, yeah I thought so, about the fire dot. Btw does no one think that going to a lower difficulty is a bit cheap? :stuck_out_tongue: Btw challenges do transfer over from characters right? So while this challenge may take some time, you don’t have to do it all on one character?

Nope. BAR and Boosts transfer, challenges do not. So you can keep advancing by playing new characters.

as he says.

1.to a lower difficulty is a bit cheap
by no means at all, especially for the 2 melee challenges it’s easier to drop into NVHM or TVHM to complete them. or to farm torgue tokens without gaining much if any XP (I suggest NVHM for this)

  1. challenges do transfer over from characters right?
Challenges stay with the same toon through all 3 modes of play, they are not shared between toons, only the total BAR and BAR perks are shared between toons.

3.So while this challenge may take some time, you don’t have to do it all on one character?
Yes , you have to do it all on one toon. each toon you start has it’s own list of BAR Challenges to do/complete, that’s why it’s always a good deal to drop into NVHM or TVHM, its a lot quicker to complete them

ummm, Yes , but you can also

you can advance BAR with the same toon, by completing a set number of challenges then ReSetting the challenges over and over

or farm 2 or 3 easy(fast) challenges with a new toon, I cover how to do this and even pick the BAR perks for the best benefit, in another post.

As far as the achievement goes I’m fairly sure you need rank 1 of all challenges on the same character. I’m not sure about this though, dunno if anyone ever even tried wether you can do it on multiple characters.

As for the “cheap” thing: No, not in my opinion at least. It’s in the game and it’s just challenges after all. The only bad thing about doing it like that is that it can be a bit boring. I’ve done it with all classes to be able to unlock customizations. Still don’t have them all so I will keep dropping to NVHM occasionally to progress them. I wouldn’t call it cheesy because you can get a lot more bar by just making new characters to play the game with naturally.

Okay f*ck it… I’m doing a portion of the kills cheap :stuck_out_tongue: I’m at 500 now, mostly legit kills… So maybe I’ll farm in NVHM 'til 650 and do the last 100 legit. After that there’s the Master Worm Food left… For some reason I killed him but didn’t get the challenge. Anyone know if it’s glitched?

Never done the Master Worm Food one and the DLC challenges do not contribute to prestiging but are good for getting more BAR rank with some of them being pretty damn easy to get.
