Sickle vs Reaper

So, I have 3k+ hours in BL2 (Probably closer to 4k by now) and a very thorough understanding of the game mechanics and characters, except for one; I’ve only recently started playing Krieg. I started playing BL2 on PS3 and Krieg was the only DLC I never bought, so when I moved to PS4 I never bothered starting him as I transferred all of my old saves across and continued playing at OP8. I’m currently level 72 (still experimenting before DigiPeak) with all missions complete, some good gear and what I consider to be a good build due to a very high success rate. However, I’m still questioning which COM is better.
Recently I’ve started using melee less and focusing more on a hybrid grenade/gun loadout but I’m still running a Legendary Sickle for those panic moments when I activate RtB so my melee damage is still as high as possible for the duration, but since I seldom melee outside of RtB should I switch to a Reaper instead? Between my Fastball for kills and Bloodsplosion chains, and DPUH for second winds and badasses that the Fastball can’t kill in one throw, I feel like the Reaper would be optimal at this stage but I know I’d be losing a LOT of melee damage if I switched out my Sickle. So my question is, is it worth the loss of melee damage in RtB for the increase in everything-else-damage if I switch to a Reaper COM? I don’t feel that I really need all the extra damage and kill skill duration, but my guess is that come time to challenge DigiPeak the Reaper will be more valuable than the Sickle - especially against bosses - and I’d rather go in prepared as I’m still figuring Krieg out and I’ve only been playing him for two weeks.

Yes, two weeks to get to 72 and complete all missions, I know I have no life.

Reaper is definitely the better COM at the peak. That said I could never solo OP8 running it. I did solo it running a hybrid Mania-Hellborn build with Legendary Torch. Not to say that you can’t do it the way you want to.

RtB is excellent for second winds at the least. I have several build setups for Krieg all explosive, all fire, and a mix. It really depends on how dedicated you are to a playstyle, and what works for you. My advice, experiment, try out many things, Kriegs versatility is very good.

Depends how do you like your rampages. Both are good coms if you go with a determined playstyle. Full melee, the election is easy (Scream Sickle or Legendary Sickle). Full weapon playstyle or hybrid gun-melee builds, Legendary Reaper is THE com.

What X said. If you’re not going to be using BXR except for those “oh crap!” moments, you’ll get more use out of a Reaper than a Sickle. A Sickle is for when you’re waiting for your health to get down to 33% or lower so you can pop RtB and got to town. For a gun/hybrid build, go with the Reaper.

Thanks all, for such an experienced BL2 player I feel like such a rookie lol. I’ve been changing up my build a lot but sticking with the same general loadout and building around that, I’m pretty happy with what I have now and I have a full vault of OP8 gear so I can’t wait to try out what I’m running now at maximum difficulty. Looks like I’ll have to farm me a Legendary Reaper, but since I’ve completed the Annex I’m off to Tundra Farmhouse for tubby Varkid and Vermi farming.

I have over 1k hours in BL 2 and I still consider myself a rookie with everybody but Maya and Krieg. I think I can competently play any of the characters, but explosive/melee Krieg is my main with Maya a close second.

Explosive/melee is the way I’m playing currently, just got to OP4 tonight with a mate who was running a Hellborn build, we both used level 72 gear the whole way through but we’re going to farm before OMGWTH.

Go reaper

So, since you were all kind enough to lend me some friendly advice, I feel I should update you on my current progress:

OP8 (YAY) man what a slog. Anyway, I first tried the famous Hellborn build, I have both a Toast COM (Boosts Elemental Elation and Pain in Power) and a Legendary Torch, so I tried them both. I used several weapons including the more common “top gear” (Should mention that from my other character I have a LOT of OP8 gear) and quickly learned why the Butcher is such a common weapon on Krieg. Yes I had a FotF, Maliwan body and battery and Hyperion capacitor. Anyway, it took me a while to get the hang of it, and by the end when I found some success I decided that I don’t particularly like the mechanics and the build doesn’t suit my playstyle. I can play it acceptably well, but it’s not for me. I can see the potential for raiding however and doubt my current spec could kill Terra.

On to the Flesh Crunch and explosive relic combo. I found them to be almost TOO much overkill (which doesn’t sound possible with Krieg) and the worst thing was that I lost too much melee damage during RtB. They just didn’t feel necessary to me, and Bloodsplosion still chains just fine without them. This may be the go-to for 3-4P mobbing but in a 2P game I was still obliterating mobs with Fastballs and Bloodsplosion chains.

The Legendary Reaper. The only thing better than buffed kill skills is longer lasting kill skills. Wow, what a GREAT COM. But, the melee problem from the Flesh Crunch arises again. I like to melee, can you tell yet? When I go into RtB, I’m doing a lot less damage than I would find desirable, I want to kill as swiftly as possible to clear my path for when RtB ends or to regen health enough to survive for my next RtB. Outside of RtB this is THE COM, but as Krieg likes taking heavy fire sometimes RtB happens back-to-back and I prefer maximum melee damage for the duration.

So, the Legendary Sickle it is. In fact, my OP8 spec is identical to my OP0 spec with one change - I now understand why melee Kreigs use the Rough Rider at OP8. Aside from the increased health and damage reduction, the roid damage from a Hide of Terramorphous (2.1m) doesn’t add a whole lot on top of Krieg’s already insanely high melee damage. I like to hit hard, but you can’t hit ■■■■ if you’re dead.

In summary, thank you all for your advice, although I did end up reverting to my old spec and playstyle I took it all under advisement and tried every suggestion before settling. I will continue learning, and man do I LOVE Krieg. Everything Krieg is contrary to everything Borderlands, he’s like the exact opposite of the other five characters and his playstyle only really synergises with Maya, the other characters almost seem a detriment on the team or rather Krieg is a detriment to them, and I absolutely love that, how different he is to the rest of the cast. Currently my equal #1 favourite with my most played Maya and he may be #1 before the end of the week, plenty more playing to come! For now, I’m going to conquer the OP8 Magic Slaughter Badass Round then reset my playthrough and complete the entire game, including all side missions (again), on OP8 with my current spec, but I’ll respec to Hellborn for raids. Thank you all, I love this game, this community, and these forums!

Edit: Oh, and a shoutout to @ChemicalConundrum who I’ve played a LOT of BL2 with back on PS3 (we both main Maya) and who has been helping me out with tips and advice via inbox. Cheers mate, I can’t wait for you to get the Handsome Collection so we can Krieg together and double Maya raid like old times!

As in, Hellborn+Bloodlust weapon-focused or Hellborn+Mania gun-melee hybrid?

The more well known one lol, Hellborn+Bloodlust, from what I’ve heard and read a Hellborn+Mania build is somewhat rare and ill advised by some experienced Krieg players, I haven’t tried it yet myself though.

I main Hellborn Mania. It’s a blast.

I don’t intend to try that until I’ve fought some raids with a typical Hellborn build and have a better feel for the mechanics. Right now I’m still having so much fun with Mania/Bloodlust, mobbing is just so easy with Krieg, I regret not spending the $15 four years ago lol but I kept forgetting and overspending on other ■■■■.

At the second post you have a small testament about a hellborn+mania build. In my opinion the common hellborn+bloodlust FotF build is the Psycho’s equivalent to your average Bee+Sandhawk, near-zer0 survivability outside raiding.

Yep. Go Mania or go home. I tried a Bloodlust+Hellborn build but didn’t like it so I switched back to my Mania+Bloodlust build.

Same here, can’t stand B/H builds.
Excepting Deputy Krieg.

You’re missing out. Once I switched to Hellborn-Mania I never looked back. It’s perfectly balanced for hybrid play and probably the tankiest build I’ve used on Krieg.

Okay, how would I go about a Mania/Hellborn build? I assume I’d still want to equip the RR, and spec lightly into Bloodlust? Say, Blood Filled Guns, Taste of Blood, and Buzz Axe Bombarier, maybe a point of two in Blood Twitch and as many as I can get in Fuel the Blood. Clearly I’d avoid Hellfire Halitosis, I used it once during my Hellborn experiments and I was like, the ■■■■ is this!?

As for a COM, would I stick with the Leg. Sickle? I’ve conquered all of Pandora now with my current Bloodlust/Mania spec and it’s still ridiculously fun. Finally, is Fire Fiend worth it, and do melee attacks that ignite enemies have a chance to ignite me? It doesn’t specify on the skill description, but we all know that not all skill descriptions are accurate.
