As one who finally understood the amazingness of turtle shields once gaige came around, one thing that annoys me to no end is the fact that both the fabled tortoise and the hoplight both have reduced movement speed as an effect. I get the entire concept and metaphor, but it just seems lazy to have two shields with nearly identical side effects (and crappy ones at that). i want a shield of ages in borderlands 2 with a stupid amount of shield with a minor health loss… anyone else annoyed by this?

Instantly refilling it on kill. If you have TPS, play Jack with a Shield of Ages and you’ll see how incredible it is to have a massive shield that is instantly restored anytime you kill something.
To the OP, I feel you there. I kinda hate it when there are several unique items from a brand that have similar effects.

I can’t handle turtle shields in general because of their slow recharge rate. I use a cracked sash or the bee so I’m used to low capacity, low delay shields that fully recharge in 1 second or so. I tried using the fabled tortoise when blue dropped it on my most recent playthrough and it lasted about 20 seconds. I only kept it long enough to drop it in the grinder when I got back to overlook.
Only time I rock Turtle shields is on a new character or when I’m going CA stack Zer0 vs. Voracidous.
Shield of Ages on Gaige would be epic though. lol
I guess the same argument could be made for Tediore shields, sort of, the Cracked Sash is in essence just a purple Tediore shield. But at least it comes with no drawbacks.
Try using a nova shield on Gaige - particularly the Black Hole - with Blood Soaked Shields, you’ll never use a turtle again.

Bandit parts help with that
Non-unique Turtle shields with decent parts can be great on Axton and Zer0 (maybe even on some of the other characters, but my experience is limited with them). Axton can considerably reduce their delay and increase their recharge rate. Zer0 has at least 5 seconds when in Decepti0n to wait for them to recharge. I’m trying an exclusively non-unique items Zer0 at the moment and a purple Turtle with less than 5 seconds delay is my shield of choice for him.
I’ve used Fabled Tortoises and Hoplites before, but I agree that their movement penalty is a little too much to make them useful outside of ridiculously specific situations. Most of the time, you’re better off using a regular purple Turtle shield.
I love me some nova shields on gaige but I just started UVHM with her and I need as much tankiness as possible so I can stay alive long enough to stack anarchy… struggle is real
