Borderlands 1 steam version

Hey guys.

Few years ago there were news, that if you have a non-steam version of the first Borderlands, you’ll get a free steam version due to the Gamespy closing. Is it still a thing? Because I’ve bought a box version of Borderlands GOTY and can’t play with my friends.
