Loose questions about Axton and his skills

i am running an explosive Axton with DPUH, Kerblaster, Ravager, explosive Badaboom, explosive relic, Big Boom Blaster, and Meteor shower. Legendary soldier seems nice, but having a +47% grenade damage, +6 steady and +5 impact seems utterly game changing. Am i missing something, or is this mod a total beast?

Oh, it’s definitely a total beast. The fact that it’s (arguably) the most popular non-legendary Axton COM proves that. Although Leg. Soldier actually has comparable overall gun damage boosts to an Impact/Steady-boosting Grenadier, and several other bonuses to boot.

Since you’re using Meteor Showers though you’re probably better off sticking with your Grenadier anyway.

So in regards to raw damage, grenadier is better than any other mod?

Dropped you in the Axton section. Best of luck!

Assuming every gun and grenade damage skill is maxed out and assuming the weapon has 100% splash damage:

No crits:
Leg. Soldier: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .2 + .39) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1) = 5.2635
Impact Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .24) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .25 + .47) = 6.7308
Expert Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .2) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3 + .47) = 6.776
Leg. Engie: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .2 + .3) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3) = 6.045

Crits:
Leg. Soldier: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .2 + .39) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1) = 8.4535
Impact Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .24) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .25 + .47) = 9.5708
Expert Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .2) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3 + .47) = 9.576
Leg. Engie: (1 + .2 + .4 + .3 + .3 + .35 + .05 + .2 + .3) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3) = 9.145

Leaving out Ranger, Crisis Management and Last Ditch Effort (which is common):

No crits:
Leg. Soldier: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .2 + .39) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1) = 3.9435
Impact Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .24) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .25 + .47) = 4.8348
Expert Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .2) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3 + .47) = 4.84
Leg. Engie: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .2 + .3) * (1 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3) = 4.485

Crits:
Leg. Soldier: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .2 + .39) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1) = 6.3335
Impact Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .24) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .25 + .47) = 6.8748
Expert Grenadier: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .2) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3 + .47) = 6.84
Leg. Engie: (1 + .2 + .3 + .3 + .2 + .3) * (2 + .25 + .3 + .1 + .3) = 6.785

tl;dr yes

Damn, thank you! it seems it really isnt that much stronger in terms of damage than legendary soldier, despite the additional 47% grenade damage and +6 steady. i am shocked, actually!

One of the downsides of using that com is that the fire rate is slower than the Soldier’s fire rate, and you also miss out on the benefit of increased cooldown (I don’t spec into Resourceful). I use it mainly for grenade chucking, so I see it as more of a specialty com. To me, the Soldier simply offers more for normal mobbing.

To each their own, though.

If the damage dealt was almost doubled i could see it, but from those numbers it only does a tiny bit more damage than Legendary soldier, which is kinda odd.

Don’t forget the extra reload speed from the Ready boost

That, too, along with Sentry, Ready, Impact, Expertise and Preparation. It’s hard to pass those up!

I’m late to the party and other people already seem to have done the hard work. Yeah, I agree that you probably would be dealing more damage with the Expert Grenadier, but the Leg. Soldier offers a lot more than just damage. I don’t think you’d notice the extra damage all that much, but the extra cooldown rate, fire rate and reload speed from the Leg. Soldier make a big difference in general gameplay. It could probably end up increasing your DPS in the end. There’s more to DPS than just high damage.

I wish someone had told me that when I first started playing this game, as I sold my Pimpernel and Sand Hawk for SR and SMg that did ‘more damage’…:sob:

I think Gut and Triad nail it…

It’s a high damage mod with drawbacks whereas the Legendary Soldier is close in damage and MUCH higher in other areas like survivability.

That being said…

A Shock or Fire Resistant Big Boom Blaster…Elemental Fastballs…and the correct Bone of the Ancient Relic…Mixed with an Expert Grenadier…

Is not only fun as hell…but about as close to OP as you are going to get on Axton minus chucking.

MANY of the top timed arena runs or boss fights with Axton are won with this combo.

But it is definitely not as survivable as your good old Legendary Soldier.

Risk vs Reward in a nutshell.

On strictly damage per second, the Leg Soldier and Leg Engi get the MVP.

Narrow the scenario down to strictly explosive weapons and you really see the Grenadier shine. The big booms get bigger and the staples like the DPUH, Fastball, and Baddaboom pack a somehow even more impressive punch.

You won’t need the turret out as much because you’re getting a lot of performance from the class mod’s feature as a grenade boost machine.

@adamplaga, I highly suggest trying the Ogre and an explosive Fastball with that setup. The results are not disappointing.

Thank you all so much! i just have a couple mre questions. With legendary soldier mod, just how effective is laser accuracy, or should i put the four points in Able instead? Also, would only 3 points in cooldown be significantly less than 4 points? Thank you! My plan is to have the turret as only support. Also, is Phalanx shield any good?

Are you talking about Laser Sight? It isn’t effective at all. It’s basically useless. All it does is make your turret aim a little higher, to try and crit humanoid enemies. It will make the turret track enemies a little slower and it will make it miss a lot more, specially the missiles from Scorched Earth. You might notice a few more crits if the enemy is right next to the turret, but it really isn’t worth it. Most of the time you won’t even notice any difference.

That build you got there on your last post actually looks pretty solid. Move the 5 points you got in Healthy into Pressure and move the point from Mag Lock somewhere else and that’s basically the explosive build I’m currently experimenting with. I’m personally not a fan of Mag Lock, but if you like it, go for it. It’s what I call a “playstyle skill”.

to be fair pretty much every turret gamechanger except Scorched Earth and Longbow Turret is a playstyle skill

edit: come to think of it, Longbow is pretty playstyle-dependent too; it’s just a lot more versatile than the others
