Shall I play Borderlands 1...?

I would need some advice as I’m hesitating to buy Borderlands. I’m on Mac and it doesn’t come cheap…

I’m a big fan of BDL2 (1200 hours) and TPS (700 hours). Would I still enjoy BDL 1 after playing 2 and TPS, in particular it’s game mechanics? Are the characters (despite who they are!) interesting to play? Could it feel a bit old? Is the story so good that it doesn’t matter?

Any advice’s welcome…

Thanks!

It would prob be a little tough to get going at first but if you can really get into the loot hunt side of things it really shines, especially once you get to the Knoxx dlc. I’ve got tons of hours into it and still play occasionally to farm crawmerax or do a few armory runs.
As far as story goes it’s lacking the substance of BL2 and a lot of stuff is kinda hidden in the mission logs and is a good idea to read them to pick up some of the info you would otherwise miss out on. Skill trees are more basic but they do the job. I don’t have too many bad things to say about the game myself, I mean I could nitpick tons of things but when it came out it really had no true predecessors to put it up against and was so different. If you decide to try it I hope you really enjoy it as a lot of us have for years.

I think the two things that would bug you most early on is having to manually pick up all ammo and money, although you can still hold down the pick up items button to group collect. And the other is no movement in FFYL which is tough to get use to after all those hours in the other two games…

Mmmmmmmmm maybe not? Since BL2 and TPS share the same engine… it’s not the same. It’s definitely less… kinetic?

I don’t know what this means. I’m curious now.

Early on I’d personally say “not so much”, but at high level I love the BL1 crew just for the fact that they become demigods. Each character is ridiculous in their own way. Roland running around with magazines of 300+, Mordecai being able to take down some bosses without reloading, Brick NEVER dying, and Lilith at… I dunno, what does she not do?

Yes, it does feel a bit old though. And no, the story doesn’t isn’t that good. If you’ve got a bit of ironic humor, the ending can be pretty funny, otherwise… well, that’s why we have DLC3. Speaking of DLC3, PLAY IT IT’S SO SO GOOD.
Also, the loot system will forever thrash the BL2/TPS one in my eyes forever. It’s not about big differences, it’s in the subtlety.

I recommend it, but don’t expect the type of game you’ve experienced. It’s definitely a quieter experience.

Thanks billthebetta and thebigguy79, very informative and useful!

Sorry for my English but I meant that playing icons such as Roland, Lilith,…is clearly very attractive but beyond this, are they really interesting characters to play in terms of their mechanics, competence trees, etc… But you’ve answered the question :relaxed:

What billthebetta said. BL1 doesn’t have an action-packed story like BL2 or TPS; the area where Bl1 excels is in the worldbuilding–the lore, the atmosphere, etc.

I forget who said this, but try every gun you find before selling. Tediore combat rifles and revolvers are surprisingly decent early-game.

EDIT: Oh yeah! You can’t spam revolvers like with Jakobs pistols in BL2, but you can hold them down for continuous fire. There’s something very comforting about getting your mouse movements in sync with a revolver’s fire rate and wiping out bandits one after another.

Since you like the other too you need to at least try BL1 the mechanics and engine are a bit different but it’s still a great game, the only major downside I would say is that the story is pretty meh, but it also has arguably the the best piece of dlc in the franchise with general Knoxx, zombie island of doctir bed is pretty great too!

Definitely get this game

Most of the story is actually contained in the mission notes that appear when you select the mission in your inventory, so it’s worth taking the time to read them.

To OP: one of the nice things BL1 did that I miss from the other games is the ability to replay echo logs!

Thanks guys, I think you’ve convinced me :relaxed:
In the meantime I have looked on YouTube and on Twitch and yes it looks like BDL 1 is a good complement to BDL2 and TPS and should not event be compared as it is fairly different in many aspects. In particular I like the post apocalyptic atmosphere. The gameplay seems very decent despite its “old” age…
So I’m gonna go for it, maybe wait until it’s on sale. Let’s now hope the game will be fluid on my end-2009 MacBook Pro…

Thanks!

Definitely wait for the Steam Summer sale. The GOTY edition should probably be $5-$10. The game is worth at least 2 playthroughs. BL1 is so different from the other two games. The loot is way better. You’ll find a gun that can carry you for 20 levels.

Borderlands is worth it. The graphics are less than borderlands 2 but gameplay is pretty good  . I also recommend all the dlc for borderlands 1 but raid on the general Knox armory is best dlc.

I’m on console but I’d say it’s a definite yes and my question is why haven’t you got it already lol.
However if I remember correctly from the old boards there’s always advice to buy it on steam.
Hope that helps.
