Maya COMs guide

Hey all, and welcome to the community Maya COMs guide. This guide has been written based uppon the experiences, and maths, of both myself and many others in the community, feel free to add your input if you think something should be changed, this is intended to be a (sort of) living document.

I hope you find it useful!

A quick rundown on Class mods:
They give 2 different types of bonuses: stats and skills. stats directly effect the stats of your character, for example, the +Shield Recharge Rate, -Shield Recharge Delay, and -Max Health from the Banshee COM. skills increase the rank of a skill you have at least one point in. Note that the ranks it adds do not help you get down the skill trees and can increase the rank over 5/5 (up to a cap of 11/5 with a Blue

White COMs only provide their stat bonus, with no skill
Green COMs will provide the same stat bonus as white COMs, and will boost one of the 3 skills listed in their entry, by a maximum of +5.
Blue COMs will have the usual bonus, and will boost 2 skills out of the 3 listed, one by +6 and the other by +5. Blue rarity COMs are the only way to get a skill of +6.
Purple COMs will also provide the basic COM bonus, and will boost all 3 skills listed, one by +5, the other 2 by +4 at maximum.

While Purple guns are almost invariably better (barring uniques) than Blue guns, the same cannot be said of COMs, the color and skills of the ideal version of each COM will be noted, if there are several variations that depend mostly on personal preference I will list each of them.

The ranking system I’ll be using is the same one used in most other guides.
Bad: Unless there are no other options, I would not recommend using these.
Average: These are not terrible COMs but you should look to replace them when you can.
Good: These are excellent COMs and
Outstanding: These are the top tier of COMs for Maya and often have builds centered around them.

This guide is split up into three sections: the first is the general use section, COMs found in this section can be used in most situations in co-op and solo play. the second section is the nursing section, this section contains COMs that can be used in Co-op primarily to help keep your allies healthy. The final section is for the Cleric COM because it is complicated.

#General use COMs

##Banshee
Average

+Shield Recharge Rate, -Shield Recharge Delay, -Max Health

Immolate (Unyielding)
Fleet (Breakneck)
Backdraft (Scorched)

The Banshee COM is not a terrible COM in the early game, it does help you soak up a little more damage with your shield, the issue is that the skills it boosts have minimal synergy with its stats. Because of the reduced recharge delay, Fleet procs for a shorter amount of time, the whole idea of she stats is that you don’t go down so Immolate doesn’t make a lot of sense, and Backdraft suffers from poor scaling if you don’t specifically build for it. That said, in niche Builds, this COM can be very powerful potencialy allowing you to save time by getting places quickly with the Rough Rider and Fleet or exploit Backdraft with the Transformer as EXOTEK shows in his Backdraft guide.

Pros:
-Tons of move-speed with a Breakneck variant
-Really interesting play-style with EXOTEK’s backdraft build

Cons:
-complete lack of synergy
-outside of specialized builds it’s not a great COM
-Deal with the Devil is not viable outside of raids

Ideal version:
For Exo’s backdraft build: Scorched Banshee +6 Backdraft +5 Immolate
or
For a Fleet build: Breakneck Banshee +6 Fleet +5 Immolate

##Binder
Good

+Team Action Skill Cooldown Rate

Helios (Hell)
Reaper (Cunning)
Suspension (Chrono)

The Binder COM is an excellent generalist COM, it offers a good balance of tankiness, damage, and utility. It’s the best non-legendary COM excepting the Trickster, a good Binder can carry you through

Pros:
-Team Cooldown rate is great, increasing up time on Phaselock while also helping out any teammates
-Reaper is Maya’s best general damage skill
-Suspension is very useful, especially against Badasses as you get later in the game
-Helios does pretty decent damage throughout the game, gaining a sizable damage boost upon entering UVHM and into OP levels

Cons:
-Provides no direct survivability

Ideal version:
Cunning Binder +6 Reaper +5 Suspension
or
Cunning Binder +6 Reaper +5 Helios

##Cat
Good

+SMG Damage, -SMG Accuracy

Mind’s Eye (Killer)
Wreck (Scheming)
Accelerate (Wild)

The Cat COM is one of Maya’s better normal COMs for DPS, it does require you to use SMGs to be used at its highest effectiveness. The accuracy penalty isn’t that huge of a deal, especially if you use Hyperion SMGs. The main issue with this COM is that it gives you nothing to aid with your survivability, but in normal and TVHM you should be fine with Maya’s natural tankiness. You may have to adjust your play-style in UVHM however.

Pros:
-gives a lot of DPS, particularly if you are using SMGs
-has very high boosts early

Cons:
-Requires you to use SMGs to be used to its fullest
-provides nothing in the way of survivability

Ideal Version:
Scheming Cat +6 Wreck +5 Minds eye

##Fox
Average

+Burn Chance, +Burn Damage

Helios (Hell)
Reaper (Cunning)
Blight Phoenix (Plague)

With the adjusted Helios damage, this COM has become quite a bit stronger. While it is still heavily outclassed by some of the other COMs, notably the Binder COM, it can hold its own as one of the few non-legendary COMs to boost Reaper. While burn damage is generaly concidered bad, it does boost Helios, raising the value of the stats on this COM.

Pros:
-boosts Reaper, Maya’s best general damage skill
-Helios works well while leveling, and scales decently into OP levels

Cons:
-Blight Phoenix does negligible damage
-poorly scaling stats

Ideal version:
Cunning Fox +6 Reaper +5 Helios

##Matriarch
Average

+Max Health, +Magazine Size

Life Tap (Leeching)
Sustenance (Relentless)
Elated (Angelic)

Similar to the Binder COM, this is an excellent COM to use in multiplayer. Mag size is nice and the boost to Max health and Elated is excellent Synergy, if your weapons do enough damage by themselves it gives you a pretty good amount of tankiness and a little DPS.

Pros:
-Gives a good amount of tankiness through Elated and Sustenance
-Mag size adds some DPS
-Max health and Elated can provide a ton of regen for your team-mates

Cons:
-the only part of this COM that adds damage is the Mag size
-makes you very reliant on having powerful weapons
-Only boosts health regain skills, no shield tanking skills

Ideal Version:
Angelic Matriarch +6 Elated +5 Sustenance

##Trickster
Outstanding

+Fire Rate

Life Tap (Thieving)
Kinetic Reflection (Mirrored)
Chain Reaction (Blurred)

With an excellent stat and excellent skills, the Trickster COM is probably Maya’s best normal COMs. There are 2 main ways to use this COM: boosting Chain Reaction for DPS or boosting Kinetic Reflection to become immune to bullets.
In addition to being the COM that allows Maya to one-shot Bnk3r and Saturn (do not attempt this on console, you will likely crash), the Blurred Trickster COM is one of Maya’s best general use COMs providing tons of AOE damage with when paired with Ruin and Converge. The Mirrored Trickster is just a blast in bullet heavy areas, such as Bloodshots’ and Sawtooth; with 11/5 Kinetic Reflection, not only will you become immune to bullets but you will actually gain health when ever you get shot. This con has gained rather a lot from the attack on sanctuary dlc, the extra 8 levels let you pick up at least a few ranks of kinetic reflection in a build like Derch’s twisted pimp build, or even make a very solid build around this com specifically.

Pros:
-Great stat
-Good skills
-3 very strong variants
-Great synergy between all parts of this COM

Cons:
-The Mirrored Trickster is pretty niche
-The Blurred Trickster can easily cause issues with frame drops or even crash your game on consoles or low spec PCs if you aren’t careful
-In the late game (OP+) boosting Life Tap can be a bit of a waste because you get such a large heal from just having one point in it

Ideal versions:
Mirrored Trickster +6 Kinetic Reflection +5 Chain Reaction
or
Blurred Trickster +6 Chain Reaction +5 Kinetic Reflection
or
Blurred Trickster +5 Chain Reaction +4 Life Tap +4 Kinetic Reflection
or
Mirrored Trickster +5 Kinetic Reflection +4 Life Tap +4 Chain Reaction

##Warder
Average

+Shield Capacity

Wreck (Scheming)
Ward (Guarded)
Recompense (Rebounding)

Another very balanced COM, gives a lot of tankiness with Ward and the stat, and a good amount of damage with Wreck. The reason I would take a Binder over a Warder is the utility from team cooldown. It is also used in Poisoned’s Unkillable build which is a very interesting Melee Maya build.

Pros:
-lets you soak a ton of damage with your shield
-gives a mix of damage and tankiness

Cons:
-DPS granted by this COM is conditional on having Phaselock up
-boosts only shield tanking skills, no health regain skills

Ideal versions:
For Poisoned’s Unkillable melee Siren Build: Rebounding Warder +6 Recompense +5 Ward (note that this build is effective only to OP4)
or
For general use: Scheming Warder +6 Wreck +5 Ward

##Witch
Bad

+Corrode Chance, +Corrode Damage

Helios (Hell)
Flicker (Splatter)
Kinetic Reflection (Bullet)

Even with the adjusted Helios damage, the Witch COM remains a terrible COM, the skills it boots have minimal synergy and the stats are pretty much useless (notably, they do not increase Cloud Kill’s damage). The Witch COM remains Maya’s worst COM.

Pros:
-boosts Kinetic Reflection
-Helios can be effective

Cons:
-minimal synergy between boosts
-poor scaling skills
-poor scaling stats

Ideal version:
Bullet Witch +6 Kinetic Reflection +5 Helios

##Legendary Binder
Outstanding

Team Action Skill Cooldown Rate

+5 Suspension
+5 Sweet Release
+5 Wreck
+5 Helios
+5 Reaper

The Legendary Binder COM is a very balanced COM providing a good mix of tankiness and damage. The Team Cooldown and Sweet Release make this the one of the best best Multiplayer COMs in the game. With its large boosts to Suspension and Sweet Release it works well with Sub-sequence and Thoughtlock.

Pros:
-Team cooldown is awesome
-Utilizes two of Maya’s best DPS skills: Reaper and Wreck
-Boosts Sweet Release providing even more utility and survivability
-boosts Suspension leading to more uptime on Wreck and Elated.

Cons:
-gives less cooldown than L. Siren
-all DPS boosts are conditional

##Legendary Cat
Outstanding

+SMG Damage, -SMG Accuracy

+5 Accelerate
+5 Mind’s Eye
+5 Wreck
+5 Foresight
+5 Reaper

The Legendary Cat COM is Maya’s highest DPS COM. Unfortunately, because every one of the boosts is for damage, it suffers from low survivability compared to the other Legendary COMs. While you do lose out a lot of DPS by using weapons other than SMGs it still gives plenty of damage.

Pros:
-All of the skills boosted are at least decent
-Gives a Ton of DPS, even more when using SMGs

Cons:
-does not increase your survivability at all
-loses the sizable boost to DPS if you aren’t using an SMG

##Legendary Siren
Outstanding

+Action Skill Cooldown Rate, +Gun Damage, Increases Movement Speed while using Phaselock

+5 Ward
+5 Accelerate
+5 Mind’s Eye
+5 Foresight
+5 Flicker

The Legendary Siren COM is another very balanced COM that works very well with almost any build. The skills are just ok but the the stats and red text are both incredibly strong. The massive cooldown rate makes taking quicken somewhat unnecessary allowing you to put those points elsewhere if you want.

Pros:
-very consistent DPS bonuses
-the only skilled that isn’t good is Flicker and that can be helpful for slagging
-strong with pretty much any loadout
-the only of the big three Legendary COMs that boosts Ward

Cons:
-Doesn’t boost any of Maya’s strongest DPS skills
-provides less team utility than L. Binder

##Slayer of Terramorphous
Average

+Burn Chance, +Burn Damage, +Max Health

+4 Ward
+4 Accelerate
+4 Mind’s Eye
+4 Sweet Release
+4 Flicker

The Slayer COM is basically a much worse version of the L. Siren COM. The stats suffer from the same issues as the Witch and Fox COMs, additionally, the Max Heath bonus is quite weak, refer to Derch’s video on Maya COMs. While it out performs many non- legendary COMs, simply because it boosts a lot of good skills, when compared to the other Legendaries and some of the better non-legendaries, it comes up short.

Pros:
-boosts a lot of skills
-decent selection of skills
-can be obtained quickly

Cons:
-lower than normal skills for a legendary COM
-bad stats

#Nursing COMs

For a more detailed look into nursing check out Spunky’s guide to Nursing.

##Matriarch
Good

+Max Health, +Magazine Size

Life Tap (Leeching)
Sustenance (Relentless)
Elated (Angelic)

The Matriarch COM is on about the same level as the Nurse COM, when Elated is up you will provide more healing for your team, and with 10/5 Sustenance DOTs will rarely bother you.

Pros:
-more survivability than the Nurse COM
-boosts Max health making Elated stronger
-Mag size gives some DPS

Cons:
-Doesn’t boost Sweet Release, that’s not really a big deal if you’re playing duo, but with three or more people the 5 orbs will be spread pretty thin

Ideal Version:
Angelic Matriarch +6 Elated +5 Sustenance

##Nurse
Good

Team Health Regeneration

Restoration (Merciful)
Elated (Angelic)
Sweet Release (Heavenly)

The boosts to Sweet Release and Elated make this the go-to Nursing COM for most people, and in teams of 3 or more I would generally agree that it is better than the Matriarch COM.

Pros:
-provides a ton of healing when you Phaselock something.
-boosts Restoration in the early game
-Decent synergy between Elated and Restoration due to the Max health from Restoration

Cons:
-the passive regen isn’t really that high

Ideal Version:
Angelic Nurse +5 Elated +4 Sweet Release +4 Restoration

##Legendary Nurse
Outstanding

Team Health Regeneration

+5 Suspension
+5 Sweet Release
+5 Restoration
+5 Elated
+5 Sustenance

The Legendary Nurse COM is the go-to for Nursing in the late game, if you are playing nurse Maya you should use one of these if you can. Works well with Sub-sequence due to the boosts to Suspension, Sweet Release, and Elated.

Pros:
-has great skill synergy, boosting Suspension, Restoration, and Elated
-hands down the best COM for keeping your team healthy

Cons:
-adds no DPS at all
-the passive health regen isn’t fantastic

##Legendary Binder
Outstanding

+Team Action Skill Cooldown Rate

+5 Suspension
+5 Sweet Release
+5 Wreck
+5 Helios
+5 Reaper

While it doesn’t stand up to the Legendary Nurse from a nursing perspective, the Legendary Binder COM is an excellent multiplayer COM due to its ability to act as a nursing COM with Sweet Release, provide cooldown rate to your whole team, and keep your own damage up with Reaper and Wreck. Similar to the Matriarch COM this is a good off-support COM.

Pros:
-Good utility from Team Cooldown
-Boosts Suspension for more Heal from Elated
-Gives more DPS than any other nursing COM

Cons:
-Doesn’t stand up to more specialized Nursing COMs with respect to nursing ability

##Legendary Siren
Outstanding

+Action Skill Cooldown Rate, +Gun Damage, Increases Movement Speed while using Phaselock

+5 Ward
+5 Accelerate
+5 Mind’s Eye
+5 Foresight
+5 Flicker

The Legendary Siren COM is your best bet for a nursing COM for Raids. Most raids have nothing to Phaselock making most of the boosts from the L. Nurse and L. Binder useless. With the cooldown from the L. Siren you will be able to Res your teammates pretty much whenever you need to in raids and the consistent non-Phaselock dependent DPS it gives allows you to pull your own weight in the fight.

Pros:
-excellent Raiding COM providing non-Phaselock dependent DPS
-high cooldown allows you to res allies all the time

Cons:
-as a nursing COM the L. Siren is very niche, being completely outshone outside of raids

##The Cleric COM
Average

As this is one of the more Complex COMs in the game, it gets its own section.

The Cleric COM could be strong in builds where you use a lot of weapons that need the same kind of boosts, allegiance builds are one such example. The somewhat random selection of skills that this COM boosts are its real downfall, with the correct build and gear this can be a reasonably strong COM, but generally you will be better off with one of Maya’s other COMs.

stats are:

Set 1:
Chaotic: +Fire Rate
Lawful: +Accuracy
Neutral: +Mag size

Set 2:
Evil: +Critical Hit Damage
Good: +Reload Speed
Neutral: +Mag size

As far as Ideal Prefixes go, your best bet is to go to Derch’s TTAoDK COMs thread and find the variant that most closely matches your gear.

skills are:

Suspension
Life Tap
Restoration

Pros:
-can be very specialized for an allegiance build or other build if you are using a lot of the same kind of weapon
-can have excellent stats

Cons:
-little to no skill synergy

Ideal skills:
Alignment Cleric +6 Suspension +5 Restoration

This new system is going to be hard to get used to. The formating changes are kicking my rear

I thought there was a post relatively early in the “New forums feedack” thread detailing some of the formatting you could use, but I can’t find it right now. There’s some useful info in the second post of this thread on the discourse forums.

Don’t forget to change the link for the old forums from “forums.gearbox…” to “oldforums.gearbox…”!

Alright, I think I’ve finished converting over, yell at me if I missed something.
Also, I converted all my colors to Hex before I realised that they worked fine if I just removed the quotes…

Thanks VH101 by the way :+1:

Maybe take out the first instance of the above, along with the separator? I would also suggest somewhere near the top of the post stating “The COMs are sub-divided into two groups based on application: General use and Nursing” - otherwise, it seems a little odd to have some of the legendaries appear twice. I’m assuming that by “nursing” you mean specifically “co-op play”, while general can be solo or co-op?

I added a section to talk about the different COM classifications, I guess I deleted the old one (oops)
Nice catch on double post.
Thanks again!

For the L. Cat COM, in cons you said it does not increase DPS. You meant survivability, I believe. Anyway, great guide, I already figured most of this out, and it’s irrelevant to me since I picked up my L. Binder anyway, but it was nice to learn a couple of new things too - such as why I have never found a +6 chain reaction purple COM hahaha. Also, I have always been confused about the Cleric COM, because I rank the skills a COM boosts far above the passive additives (Unless the additive bufs cooldown rate), and the three skills boosted by Cleric, as you said, have little synergy, Does anyone know why, specifically, they boost these three skills? I’m curious. Anyway, thanks for a great guide!

Nice catch, I always apreciate these corrections, so thank you to everyone for your continued help.
As for why the Cleric COM is so bad, I think they were trying to make the TTaoDK COMs generalist COMs that could be used with pretty much any build (see the Necromancer, Monk, or Rouge COMs), but they made some really strange choices for skills that I would really like to see explained some day that really pigeonholed it.

I wonder if it was along the lines of “People aren’t using these skills, so let’s try and give them a reason to try them out” ?

I don’t think that’s really the case. The skills that the Cleric COM boosts are all very powerful and I know they were viewed that way when TTAoDK released. the problem is, TTAoDK was released after UVHM and OP+ were already in the game, and they chose to put Restoration and Life Tap on the Cleric COM, boosting those two skills outside of very specific builds at end game is kind of a waste because of the amount of damage your weapons will do relitive to your health pool. The problem with the Suspension boost is that the COM dosen’t really have any synergy with boosting Suspension; it dosen’t boost Elated or Sweet Release, both of which are what make Suspension/Sub-sequence builds very powerful.

Basicly, the stat boosts on the TTAoDK COMs make for really good DPS COMs, but instead of either augmenting that with say, Reaper, CR, and Wreck, or going the opposite way and turning it into a tank/support COM that still gives some damage with Ward, Inertia, and Sweet Release, or something like that, it seems like they just chose 3 random skills and hoped it would work out.

Wow, your proposed COM sounds almost as broken as Sal’s TTAoDK COM, I’d love a boost to those three skills, It would be my go-to for, well, everything. Oh well, Gearbox missed their mark again, nobody is unduly surprised.

With the recent update, maybe these ratings should be reviewed. I have found the Fox and Witch to be at least “average” now that Helios and Cloudkill are good skills.

I’ll do a bit of testing either later tonight or tomorow and push an update as soon as I’m finished

Updated to the recent patch.

I changed the Binder, Fox, and Witch COMs, in addition to a few other changes here and there.

Let me know what you all think of the rankings, and as always, let me know if you see any mistakes, or if you think something should be reworded.

I would like to nominate the Witch COM for an Average rating. Since Helios has been boosted, 2 of it’s skills are good (So a blue COM is a sound choice) and the base bonus is one of the only ways to boost CK’s damage. A percentage boost to a big number is also a big number. As it stands, CK is already strong enough to almost kill Slagged Badasses on it’s own, so boosting it is not a bad move.

I’m not gonna argue that it’s end game material, but when you enter a zone heavy with armored foes, it even becomes good.

One thing though: Is CK’s damage considered to be corrode damage (as in a DoT) or just corrosive damage ? (In which case, the Witch COM bonus would not apply and I retract everything I just said)

CK counts as Corrosive damage (not a DOT) so its damage isn’t effected by the Witch COM. That combined with KR being kinda situational, Helios still being good but not great, and the skills not really working togather, I don’t know If I can justify moving it up.

I guess that means we need a third opinion

No need. I was basing my suggestion on the thought that the base bonus boosted CK.

It should stay as Bad.

Alright, I was really hoping it worked that way as well, that would have been really cool

Another thing: the Banshee COM is actually pretty synergetic now: with Backdraft now a viable option as a main skill for a standard melee build, the synergy with fleet and a Roid shields is more clear.

The base COM bonus are actually detrimental but with a level 50 version, a Blue Banshee COM with +6 Backdraft and +5 fleet is a good choice. I know there are no “Regular” Maya Melee builds out there but the update was only a few days ago.

I don’t know if it deserves a rating change, but at least mentioning that version would be a good thing.

Hmm, I hadn’t thought of that, I think I’ll mess around with it later, I don’t foresee it moving up, but I could be wrong.
